Had both of these at Petrol tonight. Both were excellent! 5$ for half pint for the Kraken but it was delicious.

Like others have said, St.A's is just outside my top tier of Tx breweries. They were good to me 4 years ago when i had no idea who they were, and ive liked the DR series, and the stouts decent. Other than that, its just not a go to for me when i can get others i like more just as commonly as i can get any St. Arnolds i do like.

and i seem to drink 8+ abv beers as session beers....

It's probably Jester King in first for me just because I love sours, but it's hard to call because Hops & Grain does brew really delicious beer. I would probably go with Hops & Grain if their Greenhouse and other smaller batch beers were a little easier to get my hands on (the Del Roble series has been amazing). Live Oak is always 100% solid and I've never disliked one of their beers so they go in second place for me.

This is a really goddamned hard question to answer.

    1. Live Oak

Live Oak Hef is really one of the best beers available in Texas. No, it's not a big beer, and no, it's not a whale, a crazy style, or anything particularly interesting. But I'll be goddamned if it's still not one of the best. Even though I don't drink nearly enough of it on account of my always wanting to try new things, it'd probably what I'd be drinking most if I'd already tried everything that I wanted to try. That's not to mention that Primus is a top notch weizenbock that I drink tons of during the winter, and--quite frankly--beats the shit out of the few European weizenbocks I've had. Old Treehugger is a great barleywine, and I really wish that I could get bottles of it. I'm curious what some sort of barrel aging would do to it, but don't think that bourbon or whiskey would work very well. I might be wrong.

    2. Jester King

OG Black Metal is still one of my favorite stouts. I can only wonder what the BA plans (bourbon, whiskey, scotch, gin, iirc?) would have amounted to, had they come to fruition. Aside from that BGR and WR are both beautiful beers that I would buy all the time--even at their perhaps too-high price points--if they were available. RU-55 is quickly becoming a favorite and I'm really happy that I'll probably still be in Texas when more is released. I agree with what lots of people in this thread have said, though: Smaller bottles would be nice, as well as more year-round beers that I love. Glad that they're at least taking a step on the former front with the 500mL for the raspberry brew that they've got coming (I heard the name, but I've forgotten it).

    3. 512

Pecan Porter is something I could and do drink a lot of. The cask variations were all really interesting, too, and I was glad to see that sort of experimentation being done. Cascabel was probably even better than that, and I wish it too would become a year round. WBADPP speaks for itself and is one of my favorite Texas beers, all the more so because I can get it in bottles.

EDIT: Oh, and I really need to get around to trying Hops and Grain. I don't know if I've ever had anything from them, for whatever reason.

sorry for the novel but my feelings are complicated, okay

Tie for me between Live Oak and 512. Both are so reliable with any beer in their lineup even though 512 has impressed me more lately. Old Treehugger blew me away 6-7 years ago. I won't forget drinking that for the first time for a long time.

Don't hate, I've never had H&G either. Wish it would make it to SA. :slight_frown:

You'd think there'd be more of us. St Arny's produces quite a few highly sought-after beers.

Yellow Rose is a massive home run for their first attempt and I could drink plenty of it. I hope they keep that pace up and I'll be watching the rest of what they make.

I would have to go with the following as my top 5 Texas breweries:
    1. Franconia brewing co. - They serve the best Oktoberfest beer its amazing. True German beer.
    2. Real Ale - I've always been a fan. Phoenix double ESB rocks
    3. PHP - Amazing beer lineup, Irish stout was yummy and man o war. Pizza also rocks.
    4. Hops and grain - also great beer line up, alt, Pale dog and Zoe. Hoping to visit soon.
    5. Southern Star brewing in Conroe TX- great beer, they got a great blonde, buried hatchet is awesome along with pale ale. Once I vivisited and they had great lager hoping they one day release it.

I can keep listing them out JK and 512 would have followed. To bad 512 is not bottled same with live oaks.
