Hello fellow BAs from PA. I am taking my family down to PA again for vacation from RI and I chose to stay at a place in Wyomissing outside of Reading. I saw some great places for Reading to go to for eats and beer but I don't want to get killed. I don't want to seem like I am overreacting but I went to the Reading city services site and saw a link for Crime Mapping and I was horrified. Can I actually get anywhere that is decent without becoming a statistic? Please chime in. we are talking for dinner type situations. Help.

Thanks. Those are a few of the places I was going to visit. I know the areas in Harrisburg and Allentown - we never visited in between . we are going to Knoebels and to Dorney during the week and the Kutztown Fair. How about the Ugly Oyster?

Stoudt's Brewery and Restaurant in Adamstown (about 15 min drive from Wyomissing) is worth a visit IMO if you have time (even if it's just for the novelty of their whole operation).

Like Abnrml said, I've never had trouble around Canal St, even if it looks a little off from how desolate the drive there is. I wouldn't consider Ugly Oyster a must stop for beer.

I guess you would call Mari's the best bottle shop in the area, and they also have a bunch of taps, but personally I wouldn't go there for a lot of reasons.

Also plenty of stuff ~30 min away to SW (Lancaster: Iron Hill, Spring House) and SE (Pottstown: Union Jacks, Sly Fox, Craft Ale House, Railroad, Iron Hll) without having to go to Philly.

Thanks for all the info - final question. Without going out to Westy's in the Camp Hill area what would be a great beer distributor to go to in the Reading area or close by? Need to bring some PA home every time I go.

I found some good things at the Beer Mart, but haven't been there in years. On the west side of Pottstown maybe a mile from the Sly Fox tasting room is Frank A Smith, they have a nice selection.

If you're going to be at Dorney, check out the Trapp Door, probably not a family place though.
Don't know how far Selin's Grove is from Knoebels, but you might want to find out. That place is certainly worth going a bit out of your way for.

Just to chime in with what everyone above said. I live in Wyomissing and it's an awesome area. And yes, there are certainly parts of inner city Reading you want to avoid, but then again you're probably not going to have any reason to go there to begin with, so it's sort of a moot point.

Mari's 6' Pac (sic) - best bottle shop in the area
Canal St Pub - in a desolate area of the city but it's fine, I go here quite often
Paradise by the Slice - 10 minutes from Wyomissing. Sports bar, Italian food, plenty of families come in here though. I'm bartender there, BM me if you want.
Liberty Taproom - 10-15 minutes from Wyomissing. Good beer
Ugly Oyster - definitely worth checking out, you can hit this & Canal St since they're really close to each other
West Reading Tavern - quaint little spot on Penn Ave in West Reading. Good beer, good food, friendly staff. And you guys can walk around Penn Ave (plenty of mom and pop stores, restaurants, etc.)
Beer Mart - your best bet for case selection and prices

    Enjoy your trip!

I would definitely try to find the time and visit Troeg's Brewery in Hershey, PA.

The Lancaster Brewery is also a good spot to hit.

If you're going to Dorney, go to Shangy's in Emmaus for cases.
