Jeff mentioned that they were going to release it at the brewery once the bills are signed into law.

Looks to me like there is already considerable support for a split brewery party/distribution release to ensure JK's stated goal (per Facebook anyways) of getting this in as many hands as possible.

You might be surprised since Austin is more centrally located then SA and a lot of people drive to FT for Ananke

It should be a long time if you think about the fact that they sold about 1200 barrels, I believe, last year and the limit, I think is 10,000 barrels a year. Theoretically think of JK, then imagine them 10X as big. Also about half of their beer goes into barrels so that doesn't count for their yield.

I could easily see 200-300 people showing up for a Jester King sour release.

Since you mentioned Ananke, do you have any idea how many people showed up?
200-300? If that truly is the outcome of a brewery only release (which is still speculation) then I really can't see them selling all 200 cases that day.. Unless every person who shows up is willing to spend the 150-200 bucks to buy the limit.

Under the current legislation that just passed the house, breweries that hold a Brewers Permit will not be allow to sell beer for off-site consumption. A holder of a Brewers Permit would only be able to sell beer for on-site consumption. Unfortunately that means larger craft breweries in the state cannot have bottle/can releases. That's why we're switching our license to a Brewpub (assuming the law changes). The Brewpub license has an annual production cap of 10,000 barrels per location, which we're well under.

I forget the exact number, but Scott gave out tickets up to the 150-170 range, thus leading to a 4-per bottle limit.

I could see this happening (although 2400 bottles is a lot to sell in a day. Even if half of that is bought, then there are only another 100 cases to go out to distro. In comparison, Whiskey Rodeo and Buddha were around 100 cases if I remember correctly, and those flew off the shelves rather quickly. I am assuming though that when they change their license to a brewpub, they would be open more than just on Saturday, so then people can buy it there over a period of time.

Also JK could do the release day, post on facebook or BA how much sold that day and how much is left and continue to do so until it's gone. This way people can judge for themselves if they need to show up the next day because it's almost gone, or take their time and visit the brewery later in the week. Either way it will get people to the Brewery and spend their money there. This should alleviate some of the panic.

If the laws pass, Batch 1 of Viking Metal and Atrial Rubicite will be released at our brewery initially. If they sell through in a few weeks or less, they won't be distributed but for festivals and special events. If they don't sell through in that time frame, we'll distribute what's left.

Our motivation isn't a secret. We make a significantly better margin selling beer at our brewery than through a distributor. We've watched from afar as out of state breweries we respect in states that allow direct sales have flourished, while we've been left spinning our wheels to some extent. We've wanted to hire more brewers and expand our barrel program by an order of several magnitudes for a long time, but haven't been able to do so but for the money. We're confident the potential law change will allow us to do these things. We make no apology for this. We frankly feel that it should be the right of a brewer in the free world to sell beer to beer drinkers.

The bottle limit was 4.8, technically, so there were about 150 people there by 11.

I'm assuming you'll be open more than one day a week if you sell it at the brewery, right?

The short term sacrifice of missing out on brewery only releases is worth it in the long run if JK can increase their profit and add new beers to their regular lineup. It sucks that I would miss out missing getting my hands on Atrial Rubicite but maybe in a few years they will be big enough to release it on a much larger scale and not be limited to a brewery only.
