First and last kit I'll ever buy from Northernbrewer

A bit ago, I ordered the "Dead Ringer" All-Grain kit from Northernbrewer. I ordered it on a Monday morning and it showed up that Friday morning. I brewed it the next day (Saturday). When my OG level was ridiculously low, I retraced my steps trying to figure out what went wrong. I posted my concerns here on beeradvocate and, threw some quality insight, learned that the grains in my kit were not crushed (despite the fact that I had clearly asked them to be crushed).

I am a novice homebrewer and this was only my second all-grain kit I had ever attempted. So I have very little idea what crushed grains are supposed to look like. So when the bag of grain arrived with a label on it that said "crushed," while admittedly I was a little skeptical if they were indeed crushed, I trusted the company who sent them to me and brewed with it. I admit that I am partly to blame for this blunder, because I did feel as if maybe they weren't crushed, but I brewed with them anyways. Nevertheless, I am a solo homebrewer (save for my buddy who knows a little bit, but not much) and if a company as reputable as Northernbrewer tells me that the grains are crushed, I am bound to trust them.

Anyway, I sent Northernbrewer an e-mail explaining the situation (and showed them pictures). They admitted their mistake and offered to replace my kit along with providing me a $15 gift card. I told them that replacing my kit would be great, but it was very important that I get the kit by this Friday (today), as that is the absolute last chance for me to brew this beer in time for my wife's birthday (it's supposed to be a gift to her). The person I spoke with said that my kit should arrive by Friday (today). He placed the replacement order for me on a Sunday. My original order was on a Monday and everything arrived by Friday, so I felt like I was in a good position.

I just checked the tracking number and my kit isn't supposed to arrive until Wednesday 5/29. Now look, I get it, the dude said it "should" arrive on Friday, he didn't guarantee it. Furthermore, I understand that weird things happen in shipping and things get delayed. I understand all that. But 5 additional days? Really? There's a big difference between Friday and Wednesday. Even if it were a day late, I could still brew it tomorrow. But 5 days late? Forget it. I won't be able to brew this beer until the Saturday after the kit arrives, which is 6/1 (and even that is looking like it may not be possible with some work stuff I have going on). So at best, I will be brewing this kit a full two weeks, and possible more, after I initially planned to brew. There is 0% chance of this beer being completed by the time of my wife's birthday.

Had they crushed the grains correctly the first time none of this would have happened.

I know some people are going to call me entitled and flame for being pissed at them, feel free. At the end of the day, my life, as many of ours, is very busy. I work full time and have a 14 month year old son. My opportunities to brew are EXTREMELY limited so stuff like a 5 day delay makes a big difference in my world. And when this delay happens on a product that is serving as a replacement for a product they had previously been screwed up, then the frustration is even more so.

Anyways, just needed to vent. It'll be a good brew whenever it's done, I just really wanted to surprise my wife with it.

All the more reason to patronize a brick and mortar Local Home Brew Store, I guess.

That being said, the few times I've ordered from NB, everything was great. I'll check out the recipes from their kits for ideas for my own. I do miss BrewingTV, though.

The worst part is I ALWAYS go to my LHBS. Unfortunately, they have limited hours of operation and for a handful of reasons I wasn't going to be able to make it before my initially planned brew day, so I figured "what the hell" and ordered a kit from NB.

    I certainly learned my lesson!

I feel your pain. And I agree that NB apparently effed up twice.

I think another lesson is... just because someone may (supposedly) know a little more about something than you do, it doesn't make them an expert. I hope your brewing buddy is walking with a little less swagger these days.

The LHBS in Westerly is open 10-7 today and 10-6 tomorrow. Steve is open this afternoon only and closed for the weekend. I'd hook you up but I have no American 2-row or Centennials...

I had an absolution outstanding experience with Northern's customer service literally yesterday. I spare the details as I don't want to at all hijack, with just saying they went far and above the normal give a shit attitude.

I know you've already reached out to customer service, you're rightfully upset and very low likelihood of success, but don't write them off fully. I'd call them up and ask for an overnight, keeping in best control of the emotion as possible. Outcome may not happen, but you'll in free conscious be able to say you exhausted all options for the wife.

I know the feeling man. It sucks to miss a planned brew day, especially for a special event. I'm brewing 6 beers for two different weddings this summer and I planned my brew days for about 6 weeks ahead of each event, just in case something came up (and I can be anal retentive). Additionally, I live next to a great LHBS, but work far from it, and making it back home before it closes is usually pretty tough. I try to get there if I can, but if I can't I order online, and shipping windows between different online places (or even from the sample place different times) can be kind of crazy.

So, no real advice here, but like VikeMan I feel your pain.

That sucks man, I understand the frustration.

One way to look at this (not that it will help anything), but technically the stuff is only being delivered 2 days late (unless the carrier it's shipping on delivers on Saturdays; in that case it's 3) due to weekend/holiday. But trust me, I understand the frustration...working in customer service for commercial roofing products that have to be at a job site on a certain day to avoid crazy crane fees and man hour compensation, having to explain the missteps of shippers and carriers (flat tire, didn't get unloaded at previous stop on time, needs to *ahem* cure the loneliness of being on the road all the time...etc) is no fun, and I've heard it all about how it screws everything up. I always feel bad, and in a lot of situations, there's not much that can be done.

I think you have every right to be upset. I know I would be too if I were in that situation.

But I too would like to speak out in defense of Northernbrewer. I'm very new to brewing and this Christmas my sister got me a Surly Furious kit from them, but got the all grain kit instead of the extact kit. I live in a tiny apartment with a frustratingly low heat stove, so all grain is out of the question for me.

I contacted NB and explained the situation, stating that in no way were they at fault, but asking if we could do anything to remedy my situation. They agreed to sell me the extract and specialty grains (all I needed since the kit had everything else) at 15% off and free shipping. I was very impressed that they would be willing to do this since they were not at all to blame for the mix-up. They earned big points with me for that.

I still throw a lot of money at my lhbs, but also buy from Northern Brewer for many things my shop doesn't have. If I were you I'd call and see if they can help you out. They're great people.

I've found that i can never plan my brew day around an order. Time and time again my orders take too long to "fulfill" and then the shipping is thrown off by another weekend. It won't stop me from continuing to order online, but i know now to place my orders at least 2 weeks in advance.

Sorry this happened to you. That really sucks. I'd bitch them out big time. I always plan my brew days around what I already have in stock and never when I need something, but I probably stock more ingredients than the average person.

Ok, I gotta call off the dogs here. I just spoke with Northernbrewer and they said that they got slammed with business this week and, essentially, they couldn't keep up with the orders. They offered me a $25 gift card, a full refund my money AND to let the packaged by delivered as normal. So I got the kit for free and $25.

While I still won't be able to brew this IPA tonight, I believe this to be a very generous offer and a demonstration that NB cares about their customers.

My apologies to the homebrew community and to Northernbrewer for letting my frustrations lead me to write them off so quickly.

I would love to go to Steve, but I am watching my 14 month year old son until my wife gets home tonight at 8 (which is when I would have started my brewing). Bringing him up there would be extremely difficult, especially given the, <cough> less than quick customer service <cough> Steve gives (no hate Steve, you're the man, I know going to see you is an experience worth the time, but I also know it's not the place to go if I need to be in and out).

But he's got a toy box there for just such occasions...:sunglasses:
That being said, I avoid bringing the kiddos on Friday nights...crazy things happen which I never seem to remember in the morning...

Northern brewer posts their recipes, so find the kit you like, jack the recipe, and go to the lhbs to get what you need.

It helps to remember that Northern Brewer is run by people just like you and me. They make mistakes. They try to do right. They are not Jesus.
NB is one of the best web retailers imo.

    we're brewers. it's 99% asshole free.

I think most of us have gotten burned by one of the online dealers at one time or another. It's frustrating because the guy on the other end doesn't really seem to know what the hell is going on. They're all pretty good about trying to get their mistakes fixed. It seems like more often than not you need to be patient with them and you come out ahead on the deal. In your case, that doesn't excuse that you had a time frame to get this done and that you should have been first in line when they got slammed with business.

    Well said.

What was even more frustrating earlier was that the order I placed using the $15 gift card arrived today and I placed that order after this dude submitted my replacement order (AND that $15 contained grains that needed to be crushed. Its not like it was a hydrometer and a carboy bung). Ha ha.
I lucked out though. The guy I dealt with ("Steve") was cool and handled everything like a pro. But I kept my calm too, even though I wanted to blow.
