You are right in that the marketing was sleazy as fuck, no one will argue that.

I'm reminded of the Schlitz Malt Liquor Bull commercial from the early to mid-80's with The Platters and Kool & The Gang.

I rather be an elitist or over 35 than get hungover (I was an elitist before March 2013, now I've been upgraded to over 35). Not everyone has a 3 year old jump on them in bed at 6:30 without fail, rain or shine.

I Drink steel reserve a lot at band practice...and I consider it a cellar protector! keeps my beer aging that I would otherwise be to weak to avoid.

I return to my roots every once in a while. Nothing wrong with it.

Back in the late 80s, we'd roll with Midnight Dragon (sold in GALLON bottles)...anyone ever have the "pleasure"? In lieu of that, it was OE-800, Ballantine quarts and (a little later on) St. Ides. Now I feel dirty. Thanks.

Perfect time to drop this classic again:

    also...Crazy Horse!

Anyone have a Cool Colt back in the early 90s? It was menthol infused malt liquor...

Like many drinkers in their twenties with little $$ to spare, I imbibed copious 40s of Mickey's and Crazy Horse. They provided a cheap buzz and gave my bladder and liver quite a workout. Good times, for sure, but these days I'd rather spend the extra dough on the good stuff...

It's been a while for me, but I have some mighty fond memories of drinking a good amount of malt liquor. My roomies and I used to do 40 Thursday back in college. We typically stuck to Colt .45 and OE, but there was a low point when the store down the street from us was selling 30s of Steel Reserve for a mere $10. Holy hell was that awesome/painful.

I wonder if wine forums have threads about the joys of drinking Wild Eye and Mad Dog? And how you're an "elitist" or "snob" if you won't drink them? Just sayin'...

That's what separates us from the wine snobs, and I love that about beer.

No, no you are not. I'll actively seek out a Steel Reserve every now and then. Might do an occasional Mickey's every now and then too. My King Cobra and Colt 45 days may be behind me though. But really, a nice cold Steel Reserve always brings a smile to my face. Always have one with my less craft oriented friends and love it. Good times and easy on the wallet.

Besides, sometimes I just wanna get my drink on. They can't all be the latest DIPA brewed with hops from Mars and the dark side of the Moon or pirateship rum barrel aged stouts.

I could do a 40 of OE every now and again, for nostalgia's sake.
