Tonight we get to try a beer using a new Australian hop grown in Victoria, just released this year, and brought back by a friend. It had a name that had to be changed due to a cease and desist from a lingerie company with initials VS. Don't know what it is called now.

I am curious.... can you folks detect that certain hops are used in beers or do you just know which kinds are used because you read the labels, recipes, info, etc.?

Jesse, I personally can detect Simcoe since it has a piney flavor/aroma to me. I can usually detect Citra since that hop has a tropical flavor/aroma to my palate. I can typically perceive Centennial as that hop is very citrusy (almost juicy from a fruity sort of way). A lot of people perceive Centennial as grapefruit.

A number of hoppy beers use more than one type of hop (e.g., Ithaca Flower Power). When multiple hop varieties are used then it is very difficult to perceive a given hop(s).

    Cheers

I am typically not a fan of solely Nelson Sauvin hopped beers. I recently had a taste (1 ounce pour) of a local brewpubs Nelson Sauvin hopped IPA; I couldn’t even drink the whole 1 ounces.

You may want to try Anchor Humming Ale which is solely hopped with Nelson Sauvin; that is a tasty beer. I think the difference is that Anchor uses a judicious amount of hops in making that beer.

    Cheers!

Galaxy. I had Stone IPA on Cask, conditioned with Galaxy and it was really citrus, orange, tangerine on the nose. From the looks of it, I really need to try Mosaic hops! I'll have to look up what's available in my neck of the woods.

Prior to the Kane event I mentioned before there were only a few hop varieties that I could pick out just from smelling/tasting (Nelson, Simcoe and Citra for the most part, though I might have been able to pick out a couple others like Cascade etc.). Now I feel I have a much more solid idea of what aromas and flavors are coming out of several others (Pacific Hallertau, Mosaic, Amarillo...)! I would love to attend another event like this if for nothing more than to continue to hone my palate to pick out specific hop varieties =)

What is this event you speak of? Sounds like quite the learning opportunity.

That's what I was wondering about really, the brews with multiple hops. It must be so difficult. The only hop I can identify in any beer at this point is Centennial in Two Hearted!

“ …the brews with multiple hops. It must be so difficult.”

Alpine makes an IPA that they call Duet: “Our original single IPA made with Simcoe and Amarillo hops “in harmony.” I have had that beer (and my homebrewed version of that beer). Since there are only two hops in that beer, and those two hops have distinctive flavor/aroma differences, I can ‘detect’ those two hops. The Simcoe provides a distinctive piney flavor/aroma while the Amarillo provides a citrusy flavor/aroma. Now, if somebody made an IPA with a blend of Simcoe and another citrusy hop (e.g., Centennial or Ahtanum) I might state: this IPA has Simcoe and Amarillo hops but I would be wrong. Yup, it can be difficult.

    Cheers!

Can I pay you to send me a mix-a-six of your homebrews?

Kane Brewing in NJ took their Head High (single IPA) recipe and made something like 11 (initially was supposed to be 9, but they had at least 2 more that hadn't been listed on their website prior to the event) different variations by making each with only 1 type of hops. It was both delicious and educational! =) They also had some other special stuff for the event like their DIPA, Overhead, on nitro tap (absolutely phenomenal!), a cask DIPA, an imperial amber/red, and a Triple IPA! I really hope they do it again some time, even if it's only like once a year!

Will find out tonight and report on these tomorrow.

The hops are a sister of Galaxy or Topaz. Will ask about them in more detail.

Galaxy, crystal and sorachi were all new to me recent. I got to try revolution's galaxy hero and crystal hero, plus pipeworks something hoppy this way comes, and they were all good to me.

I had Polaris a while back in a Crux IPA. That was nice. Crux also used Triskel (Alsace region of France) in their French Connection Imperial IPA. I didn't like the beer, but had never heard of the hop variety before.

Mosaic is the big one for me right now. I might have had it before, but wasn't aware. pFriem's Single Hop Pale and Crux's Imperial IPA were both really nice.

Jack, I have had a lot of Zeelander IPA by Topppling Goliath. It is 100% Nelson and heavy at that, and it comes across a lot more herbal and dank than when I use it. It is pretty tasty. The Anchor Humming Ale to me is ok as well but a little thin and one dimensional to my palate.

I recently tasted Galaxy hops for the first time in Point's new Galaxy hopped IPA.

Nelson Sauvin, when heavily used (e.g., an IPA), has a weird flavor (a weird white wine flavor?) that I don’t like. Another local brewpub made an all Nelson Sauvin hopped Pale Ale that I was able to drink an 8 ounce glass of. With the exception of Anchor Humming Ale, I really, really don’t like Nelson Sauvin hops on their own.

The Anchor Humming Ale is a non-complex beer. It is classified as an APA but to me it is a nice summertime type beer (like a Blonde Ale in that regard). I enjoy drinking Anchor Beer but as I stated it is a non-complex beer. It has drinkability!

    Cheers!
