My friend is going to Manchester next week and I was wondering if there was any delicious beer that is only available in England (obviously, around Manchester) that she can bring back? Pretty much open to any style. Thanks guys!

Not really sure of anything in the area but if she is willing to visit some bottleshops I would send her hunting for stuff from The Kernel brewery. They make some of the best beer in the UK.

Unfortunately, much of the best English beer needs to be experienced as real ale served from a beer engine and you have to go there yourself to experience that. Probably best to have her look for porters and stouts as they don't lose as much character as a bitter does when bottled.

Yes try some Magic Rock, Kernel and Thornbridge. I just saw a few Thornbridge beers here but not enough.

I've only had Thornbridge out of these and I've heard amazing things about Kernel, but I would love to hear suggestions for beers that didn't feel like they were catering to contemporary trends or takes on American interpretations. I think Thornbridge does some fantastic stuff, but they can be over the top. Take a look at the styles in The Kernel's line up on this site - sensibility wise, it feels like they could be located in California (granted I haven't tried any... their stuff could be distinctively different).

if its not bottle conditioned it has to be pasteurized so pretty much anything is going to taste better than beer you can get here. Any good british Ipa has to be loads better non pasteurized!

Kernel put a load of effort into researching and producing historical styles/recipes produced in London in the 1800's

    Stout, porter, brown ales etc.

OP love Marble, but they get some distro in US so do a little research so you don't get what you can get here. Also love your user name in a sort of ironic and wistful way.

Would you say they are the premier brewery regarding this?

(You've got a great avatar BTW)

I'm not so sure it's Evin doing the actual research.

I think this answers my question.

Ron, how would you characterize the difference between working with The Kernel vs Once Upon A Time (if any)?
And for that matter, The Kernel's efforts vs Meantime?

    (sorry to threadjack)

I haven't worked that closely with Evin. He's brewed a recipe or two I've published. I've also sent him a few recipes when he's asked for something specific.

Me and Dann really cooperate on the Once Upon A Time series, discussing which beer we're going to brew and then bashing out a recipe together.

I've done one beer with Rod at Meantime, a one-off royal wedding beer.

You'd probably be surprised at how few of the beers I've been involved with I've got to try.

Just tell her to look for any place that has my avatar hung on the wall.

Because they're usually brewed in a country other than the one in which I live.

If I could get Buxton beers here I would be delighted. Only tried it on cask, though, but man were they delicious.
