+ 1 for Buxton, Kernel, Magic Rock, Marble

Also keep an eye out of Partizan, Summer Wine, Fyne, Tiny Rebel, Oakham etc etc

Though keep in mind the Kernel pale ales and ipas, as well as a lot of from the other breweries mentioned are similar to the best stuff you'd find in the US

Id disagree in that I would not buy much, if any, bottle English beer in the US. The only exception would be if I knoew how fresh it was...

I am actually in Manchester and am willing to help in person
Marble as mentioned is specifically Manchester and you can get it at source
there are also the smaller Wincle & Dunham Massey breweries for some more English/Brit beers rather than US inspired stuff

Yes , suggesting US influenced beers is the equivalent of telling a British tourist who asks for good restaurants in Paris where to find fish and chips.

If it was a slightly differing interpretation of fish and chips done with traditional French methods of cooking, along with both French and British people telling you how amazing they are, then yeah.

Also I think you'll agree that taking bottles of bitter or mild might be disappointing as the cask is where those styles really excel, whereas, for example, the nice pale ales that the Kernel make are predominantly brewed for bottle distribution.

Certain that the bottles would be disappointing which is exactly why I rarely drink any.

Also because you have tons of cool pubs nearby I'm guessing!

Too many, they get in the way and I trip over them. My car twitches when I drive past them!

I can vouch for Bevis. Just don't go drinking with him under the assumption that you can keep up. We had a Flash vs Superman thing going last summer in Sheffield and his 'infinite mass punch' earth shattering.

CwrwAmByth and Padraig have mentioned most of the breweries I'd think of, but I have to put a recommendation for BrewDog.

No matter what you think of their PR, they produce two takes on hoppy beer that you just can't find in the US:
5 A.M. Saint is a sticky, hoppy, low IBU amber at 5% ABV. You can't get a beer with hop aroma like this in the US under 7%.
Dead Pony Club is a big hit of Simcoe and Citra at only 3.8%. Session ales are starting to appear in the US, but there's still nothing like this.
These are expensive and not fresh if and when they appear in the States, but should be no problem to find in the UK.

Elland Brewery's 1872 Porter has just won Champion Beer of Britain at the Great British Beer Festival. It's available bottle conditioned and is very good.

I can also vouch for BrewDog though bear in mind that it is actually a Scottish brewery. Scottish breweries can considered to b e British but never English in the same that English breweries can be called British but never Scottish.

Dead Pony Club is really underrated and worth a shot. And it is a real treat in cans.

FWIW, a beer trip to Manchester must include a trip to Marble and pints of Holt Bitter and Mild.

I am not Brewdog's biggest fan by a long shot but I have to admit Dead Pony Club is tasty and fairly accessible
Hello ..... My Name is Ingrid too has it's charms and doesn't command a ludicrous price
& I quite enjoy Alice Porter just can't get hold of it anymore so easily.

However I can't leave BD without mentioning at one slice of BD BS
Stay clear of Libertine Black Ale Just a wreck of a beer and not on the entry level prices :astonished:

And CwrwAmByth mentioned Fyne, who are also Scottish, and Tiny Rebel, who are Welsh. I thought we'd kinda moved beyond the thread title when I posted.
But what you say is correct, of course, Zimbo. I get the rage when people misuse the nomenclature in talking about Ireland.

A bottle of Kernel Pale Ale is an absolute treat and certain NOT to disappoint. I'd take one over the bulk of Cask beers any day.

Not trying to be a pendant though I know it mat look that way. Still it's nice to see that craft beer spirit spiraling across Britain and Ireland.
