Hey to all of my fellow Beer advocates. I need some assistance...

I live in Kansas. I have a relation in the Auburn Hills area who has just passed his
residency and is becoming a Dr. after being in Michigan for a couple years. Long
story short he's coming back to Kansas to practice. He's loading up his stuff in like
a week and driving back. I want to have him snag me some good beers only problem
is the list I could give him could be an endless fruitless search SOOO...

Whats on the shelves around the area and what stores are the best to check out?

Would be a god given miracle at this point to even hope to stumble across any Hopslam out
    there right?

I'm a huge fan of Bells and of course two hearted ale is on my list and I know thats around
but I'm also a Founders HOUND, love it! Whats around up there hanging on the shelves that
you guys have seen pretty recently??? Let me know so I can forward him the info!

    THANKS!!!!!

Founders Devil Dancer just came out this week, and Double Trouble should still be on shelves (Triple and Double IPA respectively). Founders Rubaeus (raspberry ale) also was recently released.

I'd recommend having him grab you some Short's, awesome beers that are only distributed in Michigan. Huma Lupa Licious is their year-round IPA and is one of my favorites right up there with Two Hearted. Dan's Pink Skirt was their last specialty release and was amazing, reminded me a lot of Lagunitas Sux. Might be hard to find now, it flew off the shelves, but if he stumbles across any that would be a must-grab IMO.

Odd Side is another one that is MI-only distro (I think). Their Citra Pale Ale is awesome, drinks more like an IPA, and their Simcoe Sensation is a solid session ale.

    Hope that's helpful.

In addition to those beers above, have him find some Bell's Expedition Stout. It's not really "in season" right now, but I've seen it plenty of places. It seems to get forgotten as one of the good ones from MI when this kind of topic comes up, but it's really one of the better beers made in this state, if you ask me.

Hopslam is going to be tough to find at the better bottle shops, but some out of the way places may still have some.

    As for stores:
    8 Degrees Plato in Ferndale
    Holiday Market in Royal Oak
Red Wagon in Rochester or Troy
    Beer Baron in Livonia
    Cloverleaf in Royal Oak

Also, have him swing by Kuhnhenn and fill a growler of DRIPA for you. You will be very thankful that he did.

On the Kuhnhenn note, he may be able to get some BB4D or TRIPA. If winter solstice was any indication, there should be some left over.

these are good stores mentioned but they arent real close to Auburn Hills. i would check out Orion Keg and Wine on Baldwin rd, that could be a one stop shop for some good Michigan beers and its only a few minutes from Auburn Hills. one more exit north from Baldwin is Pine Knob Wine Shoppe and they also have a very nice selection.

I approve of all of the beers mentioned and cant stress enough to have him buy some stuff from Shorts.

I'd say if winter solstice is any indication, they will sell out of BB4D and TRIPA that day. Even though there were a bunch of beers left over, most of the popular, lower limit beers sold out that day. I dont know how much they are releasing, but that is just what I noticed.

Hopslam is almost 7 Months old at this point. Pass on it. Another decent brewery is Brewery Vivant out of Grand Rapids. Most bottle shops carry their beers. And Darkhorse has a variety 12 pack out right now. I will third the consensus that Short's makes some great beers. Bell's Oberon is everywhere and a great summertime beer. Personally, I would beg him to stop at FFF in Munster Indiana (off of I-80, just outside Chicago) and try to grab some Zombie Dust, Gumballhead, Apocalypse Cow, Dreadnaught, and Arctic Panzer Wolf. But hey, that's just me.

I don't know how much running your relation is willing to do for you, but the Rochester Red wagon is the closest good bottle shop to Auburn Hills. It has been a few years since I have been, but they did a good job there.

I prefer Holiday and Cloverleaf in Royal Oak, but it is an extra 20-30 minute drive from Auburn Hills. Maybe longer depending on traffic.

I picked up everything I wanted to (except BBBW) a week or so after the winter solstice.
That included near a case of BB4D.

BB4D ran out in the morning of that day. BBBW ran out that day or shortly after. Those were the popular limited ones I was meant. They release more BB4D after the solstice, and that is what you got. Depending on how much they have of each, I bet they last through the day on Saturday. I wouldn't count them lasting longer than that. The small limits across the board might assist by keeping people from driving long distances. For Kuhnhenn releases, people tend to make assumptions based on previous releases and then get mad when it isnt like that.

I know this and I guess I was trying to make that point. They may have more released very soon after, long after, or not at all.
Can't assume anything with Kuhnhenn, you're dead right about that.

Have him stop by the Meijer in Auburn Hills. Believe it or not, they have a decent selection. I found Founders Better Half and Frangelic there.

    Were they giving away Frangelic?
