I want my beer in a wide, shallow bowl. With a crazy straw.

I always ask for a glass. If you are hanging with friends, why would they be upset you asked for a glass? Even most hippies have glassware at their house, and if they dont have any glassware, why are you hanging out with Bear Grylls on a deserted island in the Arctic Ocean?

Nothing wrong with asking for a glass. And when I do, most times they will ask if I want a warm or cold one.

Everyone seems to be making an assumption that the question was about a bar. I'm not reading it that way. "People" could be your ignorant friends who more than likely don't have the right kind of barware. So you could be faced with an option of bottle, 6-oz. juice glass, cheap generic wine glass or a coffee mug. Given those, I will take the bottle. If it happens at a bar, I'll ask for a glass (but, in that case, I'm not "given" a beer -- I'm buying one and I'm the one who selected it). And, if it's at a bar, more likely than not I've already determined that their taps suck, which is why I'm going with a bottle, so my expectations are pretty low and chances of return slim.

If a server doesn't bring me a glass with my beer I usually calmly flip the table. Then I politely ask for a glass.

I just got handed a heady topper can without a glass at the skinny pancake I. The Burlington airport and I am quite content!

This thread is bordering on ridiculous. If you want a glass, ask for it.

If in a craft brew pub or a bar that emphasizes better beers I have seldom not been offered a glass. In a regular bar if I select a bottled craft beer and they do not provide a glass, I ask for one. Never had a problem with it.

Just ask for a glass, I guarantee the server won't spend as much time worrying about your request as you clearly have.

If they have the good beers at the place, usually they are on tap so I get a glass anyway. Most of the time, they bring me a glass with the bottle if it isn't on tap. There are some lower class places where they just bring you a bottle. I wouldn't recommend those places.

I've literally never been in a bar that, if served a beer sans glass, I would ask for one. If you're ordering beer in a bottle, you're either in a dive/sports bar and who gives a shit how it is served, or you're ordering from the bottle list at a craft bar/nice restaurant, and I can't imagine it not coming with a glass.

If you're talking about someone giving you a beer while you're at their place for a barbecue or something, really? You're caught up on how they present a beverage to you while a guest in their home?

I know this website is called Beer Advocate, but sometimes I'm amazed at what people decide to be concerned about.

I was playing a show at a bar/restaurant last night in Decatur and when I ordered a Green Flash West Coast IPA, I was given only the bottle. True story.

Beer bottles are glass. Its whats inside the bottle that counts. I drank a homebrew the other day out of the bottle and I was fully satisfied! Cheers.

"Only the bottle" ? Nothing in it? I HATE when that happens... (but at least there's no uncomfortable etiquette faux pas asking a for a glass in an improper or rude manner with an empty).

I can't believe it took that long for someone to say they would just drink it. Now I'll admit it depends on the beer but I doubt any bar that wouldn't give me a glass if I ordered a bottled beer (which I rarely do) would have any of the beers I would only drink out of a glass. Also a lot of BA's need to grow a pair and speak their minds (in a respectful manner) to servers and fellow human beings for that matter.
