South African Microbreweries?

This thread has been dead for almost a year but I'm gonna revive it. I found this website it's pretty interesting, can anyone add any comments about which places are worth visiting, where to find a good bottle shop, etc? I will be mostly in Joburg and Capetown when I visit. Thanks!

Not that many bars on the list but in CT I would recommend going to Banana Jam Café, BeerBar on Long, Wembley Tap (opening 24th Oct) ... and a few more...

 

Banana Jam is a great place to go. Got to try a bunch of great stuff. Mitchell's Brewery didn't have anything that wowed me, but it was pretty solid and a fun place on weekends.

Cape Brewing has a great tour, especially if you go to the distillery and winery next door. They also happen to have some of the best beers I tried in SA (second only to Devil's Peak, their IPA was fantastic).

Didn't get to tour Devil's Peak unfortunately, but I got to try their beers at The Old Biscuit Mill. There were at least 8 different brewery stands, got to try some very good stuff (even one brewery from Namibia, can't remember the exact name).

 

Camel Thorn from Namibia?

 

Possibly. I remember they had a roiboos beer. Their stuff was interesting but nothing great.

 

All the Camelthorn I have had sucked. I dont rememeber seeing a rooibos beer though. It could be something new though!

 

Camelthorn made a Rooibos beer not long after Christian Skovdal Andersen was there brewing "his" (Bierwerk) rooibos beer. I thought their Bokbeer was OK!

 

Ah okay nice. I have never seen any bierwerk beers in stores. Id love to try them!

 

Bierwerk: When brewed at Boston (in Cape Town) they where available there. Ask the Camelthorn stand at Neighbourgood Market (Old Biscuit Mill, Cape Town) if they could take some Bierwerk beers to SA.

 

Hahaha everything good is in Cape Town! I seriously need to move!

 

So, I figure I would give this a bump. @Thehuntmaster - what should I be looking for in SA? I will have a rental car, I will have just one night in J-burg, 3 nights in Durban, and 5 nights in Cape Town. I figure I can do some damage by actually going to some of these new breweries that are open.

Do you have any suggestions? Any must hit breweries that are new onto the scene? Taproom hours? For someone who knows absolutely nothing about which breweries are worth a damn or not, any input would help.

 

Looks like I missed this too, but Stellenbrau in Stellenbosh just outside Cape Town is the place to go. If you don't like the beer there are hundreds of wineries to go to while you are there.

 

@homebru @Thehuntmaster I will be in Cape Town next month for work for about a week. I don't know how much free time I will have (I am on an organized wine trip) but I would love to bring over some beers from the US for you if you'd like to do an IP trade? I work for a distributor in South Carolina. Cheers! Also, is that list from 2013 for good beer bars in CT still accurate? Thanks in advance!
