As everyone said, minnesota doesnt allow out-of-state breweries to self distribute. Hence why Stone Enjoy By costs 9$-12$ here and 7$-8$ in all our neighboring states.

Nah, Stone is to big to self-distribute. That is something else going on.

My guess is that the distribution cost is what is driving it up in the state, since the distributors have no reason to keep prices down from self-distributing breweries.

I don't think Stone self distributes in our neighboring states.

Cheaper in Wisconsin, yes. But, is it because Wisconsin's excise tax on beer is about a third of what it is in Minnesota. What about other neighboring states? Iowa or NoDak where the excise tax is similar? SoDak, where the excise is double that of Minny?

I have never purchased like items in other states, so I am not sure what a bottle of Enjoy By would cost in Iowa or Wisconsin.

Stone is not available in WI,SD, or ND.

But from what I have seen Stone 22oz's in MN run $3+ over what we pay in IA or NE.

Oh yeah. I forgot Stone pulled out of 'Sconnie. How much are Stone Bombers in Iowa and Nebraska?
Check out this link, and I think you still have your answer: http://www.taxadmin.org/fta/rate/liquor.pdf

Depends on the beer, but Enjoy By is $6.99/bomber.

There are other states where Stone doesn't self distribute where their beer is not priced at a higher tier (like it is here). And the distance from CA argument doesn't apply considering several of those states I am referring to are in the SE. I get the impression that it is mostly the distributors' decision that is responsible for the higher prices here.

Yep, $2-3 higher here. My local sold EB for $8.99, but most other stores were $9.99 that I saw. I might have purchased some at $6.99, but that beer was not worth $8.99 IMO.

    Yes - i agree.

My point is that in a state that allows everyone and anyone to self-distribute, it adds competition to the market and ultimately drives down prices. Because companies like Stone are forced into using one of a handful of distributors in MN, those distributors can monopolize the market to a certain degree, and price gouge because there are no alternatives. I know Iowa probably doesnt have that many distributors either, but there is the potential for them. I think there was a discussion on mn distribution a while back where someone pointed out that there was a slightly incestuous relationship between Stone and one of the distribution companies here. When that relationship was created, the prices dropped, and the two other distributors had to follow suit. Prices levelled off. I had paid 13$ for enjoy by back in june and at the same spot paid 10.99 for 11.12.13

There have been enough rumors and conjecture on the subject, but we all know something fuzzy is going on here where you see such huge price discrepancy.

Im guessing is distributor controls and excise taxes.

This is why i think the MN Beer Advocates constant "sell beer on sundays" stuff is overshadowing the taxing and regulation on the industry. You want to make more beer available to the state, lobby to drop the taxes and allow self-distribution, then go after sunday sales. or do both at the same time

I agree with some of what you say, but I'm not so sure the excise tax is to blame. I know that the majority of stores in GA, FL and SC set lower prices than the initially high MN Stone prices. And each of those states has equivalent or higher excise taxes according to the link mnstorm99 posted above. Also, for fun, take a look at Alaska. #2 on the list. Quick check of BA pricecheck postings shows that one person bought a bottle of Suede (new Stone collab) up there for $8.

I feel like the Stone pricing in MN is due to some kind of perceived demand by distributors or something. I would buy tons of their IPA and Ruination if it were priced like other states. Currently I only buy the standards on tap and some special releases in bottles.

I gotta love how people speak up against Obamacare because they are forcing us to buy a product when Distributors are the same thing.

We are legislated to use them as a middle man and all they do is sit there and mark up the price for the extra step that isn't necessary.

The allotment for Darkness is already being messed with from Surly's new distributor. Places that got a lot before are getting less and visa versa. People used to be able to talk to Surly since they were loyal for so long and get their allotment changed, but now that they are going through a distributor they don't have a say in it.
