Ommegang. One of the best domestic brewers of Belgian styles out there; enjoying some of the new stuff they have put out this year. They are also the only NY brewery to have 3 beers on the Beers of Fame list. They get my vote.

Wow. All this talk about peekskill , I think I might have to take a ride up Saturday for dinner/drinks. Do they sell bottles or growler fills there?

Will Peekskill ever take their beer to bottles?

    1) I'll jump on the Peekskill train. It is my favorite NY brewery hands down and IMHO one of the tops in the country.
    2) I'll sign the petition for them to package their delicious greatness. I vote cans.
    3) I'll be going there this weekend for lunch and a pint.

That is all. Oh wait.... My advice is to plan your trip now before they go the way of 3F and HF where you have to wait in line to get some beer/and or food. I have yet to have that pain for pleasure at PB and appreciate it. (Full disclosure I have never been there on a Friday or Saturday night.)

Peekskill has an amazing brunch on the weekends. $20 for an appetizer, ridiculous chicken & waffles sandwich with fries, and a beer. I could barely finish the massive chicken & waffles sandwich, never mind everything else that came with it.

I've had Peekskill every year at TAP NY, and I never had anything that blew me away, granted I don't remember what I had, I'm gonna have to give them a more conscious go. Is it all brewery only? Or do their kegs make it to NYC or LI?

It's hard to answer this question in my mind because there are so many breweries in NY that I feel NYer's haven't even tried. I realize this every year when I go to TAP NY. I live in the same town as Barrier and visit there frequently and yes it's good, but I don't have the option of getting some Brown's or Defiant or various others...its a "grass is greener..." mentality.

It's weird when you think about it too because I rarely buy Southampton beers during the year, but yet every year I'm on line for their IRS, and that beer blows me away everytime. Everytime I go I sing them praises and rave about their beers, yet my purchasing decisions reflect otherwise...kinda funny.

I can't say their is a best because 1) it's subjective, and 2) I've had a very small majority of NY beers.
    Here are ones I like:

Southampton - their IRS is one of the best in my opinion.
    Barrier - local fav.
Captain Lawrence - always enjoyed them, miss their releases.
Ommegang - so many solid year round offerings, brewery is beautiful too.

Here are ones I'm disappointed in:

Blue Point - used to be a really cool brewery like 4-5 years ago...haven't made anything worthwhile in a long time...maybe ever.
Port Jeff - don't understand why people are such big fans, I haven't had a single enjoyable beer by them.
Long Ireland - they need to make something new.

Peekskill kegs make it around NYC quite frequently. Very easy to find Eastern Standard IPA, Hop Common, and Simple Sour. Have randomly seen Midnight Toker and Higher Standard on tap in Brooklyn. Amazeballs, Shotgun Willie, Flavor Saver, Awesome Sauce and others make occasional appearances at tap takeovers, but are usually brewery-only.

Yeah - I've never been the brewery, but at various places in NYC I've had all of these except for Flavor Savor and Midnight Toker. It's great stuff

The fact that there is a lot of suggestions is a good thing...NY is coming up!

I recently read that there are 93 breweries in New York State. In fairness, how can this question of best NY brewery even be considered?

Because this is Beer Advocate, and deciding which is better and which is not as worthy is pretty much the basic idea of the website.

Let me know what you're interested in and next time I'm up there I'll pick you up a 64 of it. I'll probably be up there again before the end of November.

I drove up to Peekskill for dinner last night after reading all the positive reviews in this thread. I must say, they make some good beer. Amazeballs was very good. Tastes very similar to Hil Farmstead edward. Their food on the other hand, wasn't anything special.
