I'd speculate it has to do something with being a pretty heavy/caloric beer and is essentially the same sleepiness from a big meal. While big meals generally have many more calories, liquid calories are absorbed much more quickly. Dark malt will be absorbed quicker due to it being cooked- it is essentially partially digested to our bodies.
Combine that with the booze, and that sounds like a sleeper to me.
As to whoever mentioned Sour Diesel IPA, that sounds like a dank brew :stuck_out_tongue: I'm still waiting to see an OG IPA

I'm not judging you personally, just commenting on the scenario represented. What's more messed up is not that a certain ABV gives you a different buzz, but the fact the first thing you do when you wake up on these off-days is drink. That's not normal, although it may be on BA. I'm a pretty heavy drinker, but I have always found morning drinking to be bizarre and, to my system, repulsive. Caffeine is my morning drug. Feel free to berate me. Cheers.

"That's not normal" maybe not for you, but for the Original Poster (OP) he seems to enjoy it. IMO it doesn't sound like you are a heavy drinker whatsoever if the idea repulses you. He also said "basically right when I wake up," and if OP is anything like me he is brewing his coffee, drinking it, emptying his bowels, showering, then pouring a beer a little less than an hour after waking.
But go ahead and keep judging others for not having the same preferences as you, despite the OP (presumably) having his "habit" under control. On another note, have you heard there are countries where people drive on the left side of the road!? :stuck_out_tongue:

OH MY GOD. How can you have beverages with caffeine? You have a drug problem.

I have *a* beer. Occasionally, two. I probably have five beers a week total.

They certainly do for me. Darker beers seem to hit me harder and with much a much 'warmer' feeling. Russian imperial stouts, barleywines, etc. give me a flush, warm buzz relatively quickly; even if they're lower in abv (relatively speaking). Belgian beers tend to pull the rug out from under my feet at a moment's notice.

FBS tastes way better than coffee and it doesn't have dangerous arrhythmia triggering caffeine.

I have this happen as well. I think it has to do with fermentables. Maharaja, most of stones offerings, and some others out ther e use simple sugars to dry out the brews, and these seem to give me a headache from the first drink. It happens with belgians too.

As for stouts not hitting a person as hard as a hop bomb, I wonder if fg has anything to do with it. Just a thought.

No. This is perceptual difference masquerading as empirical evidence. There are far too many variables at play in intoxication to declare that Style A gets you more buzzed than Style B. Especially if Style A has considerably less alcohol than Style B, and I would qualify 7% compared to 10% to be significant.

I would gladly change my tune if someone can provide some actual, scientific data showing otherwise.

Incidentally enough, it's a pretty hard thing to test because of the nature of intoxication. Each bit consumed impacts the effects of future alcohol intake.

It's strange for me. Sometimes I can knock back mixed drink after mixed drink (and I don't make them weak) yet 2-3 beers can make me feel very buzzed sometimes. It probably depends on what I ate earlier and as others have mentioned, my mood/perceptions, etc. The speed of which I drink would impact that as well, though I feel I drink mixed drinks faster.

I've had my fare share of Belgians. They seem to give me a more positive "Buzz" than if drinking an American Brew. I believe the Belgians smile on their grains and yeast. Or it can be the ridiculous amounts of sugar added also.

For what it's worth... I'm not sure about the science but, the only two beers that I noticeably saw a detectable drunkenness after one bomber were Sam Adams Imperial White and Stone Imperial Russian Stout. Stone IRS might be a portal to Hell.

I'd not throw stones since you don't know him. My wife, for example, could be the poster child for problem drinker. I've seen her drink at breakfast many times on the weekend. She will sometimes wake up and pour a mimosa or even make a mixed drink. Then again that is usually the only drink she has all day and she will go weeks without a drink and not even realize it. She drinks when she feels the urge and doesn't drink when she doesn't. I'd bet there are a few problem drinkers on BA that only drink after 5...

I'm thinking you probably drink the IPA much faster, since most people tend to sip RISs. Also depending on the stout and IPA, maybe you have a really sugary stout and a really dry IPA, that could make you feel the alcohol faster also.

I guess that I'm the one with a problem because I have WAY more than five beers per week.
