Anything from Sierra Nevada. Inexpensive and distributed in all 57 states:wink:.

Go to your local store and start a conversation with the beer guy or gal. Don't be afraid to sound like a noob. You'll end up with some new brews tailored to your preferences, and possibly the start of a good relationship!

Look, I'm aware that 5.2% isn't high. There are several beers I enjoy that are 7% or higher. The problem is when the alcohol isn't hidden well, is unbalanced, or is deliberately in your face; it makes the beer so sweet that I can barely choke it down. Despite Hobgoblin's low abv, the alcohol character in it is quite evident, and, in my opinion, almost fusel. It's the same reason I couldn't finish DFH90, it was so sticky-sweet that it wasn't drinkable IMO.

I'm not stupid. I just hate it when a beer tastes like somebody dumped a shot of bourbon in it.

And with some of these comments, we wonder where the new folks go...

Try checking seekabrew, OP. That will give you an idea of the breweries distributing in Florida. Then you can poke through the styles, see what characteristics you like assuming you already have some favorites and find similar beers. Lagunitas and Sierra Nevada are generally solid choices and have a decent range. I would also suggest not giving up on a style after on try or even a few tries. Some things take time to grow on you. There is a lot of beer out there and there is no rush. The reviews...hmmm...I personally find them useful, but I read a bunch and try and average out the comments. YMMV. So you like 2 Hearted...figure out what you like about it and find similar beers, branch out from there. Cigar City is a pretty highly regarded Florida brewery. No laws saying you have to like everything and it takes time.

Thanks. I managed to find some Jai Alai the other day... amazing IPA, wish I had bought a six-pack instead of a single can, but when I try something new I'm always afraid of ending up with 5 beers I don't want to drink if I opt for a six pack, if that makes sense. I'm not familiar with anything else by Cigar City, but I'm keeping an eye out.

I've been considering either Ten Fidy or Young's Double Chocolate Stout for a while.

Yeah, you cannot go wrong with just about any of Sierra Nevada's offerings. New Belgium is solid, nothing mind blowing but always good.

If you're looking for a good traditional german beer instead of the very American IPA or Stout, Weihenstephaner anything is basically available everywhere and is dirt cheap. ~8 dollar six packs in my neck of the woods.

Just to echo a few thoughts already mentioned, and urge using them together.

Seekabrew tells you what is available in your state, the "best" lists here tell you which beers are highly regarded in general, the reviews here tell you what specific characteristics each beer has. Using these tools together is as close to what you are looking for that there is.

This site was founded to be the exact tool you say you are looking for, and always has been for me.

Seek: Duvel, any Gueuze you can find, Goose Island Sofie, Allagash White, Victory Prima Pils, etc.

Avoid: Ten Fidy and Young's Double Chocolate. As some of the reviews will tell you, they are boozy and sweet or sweet.[/quote]

Sweetness doesn't bother me, so long as it doesn't taste like bourbon or brandy.

I'm confused. In multiple posts you've said you don't like high ABV beers because they are cloyingly sweet.
Here you blame the taste of Bourbon or Brandy. But DFH 90 (and some of your other examples) has no flavor of Bourbon or Brandy in it. Even when aged the DFH takes on a Sherry character that isn't similar to bourbon.

There's something going on here that you're not understanding and describing yet.

I suggest you think a bit more about cavedave's advice, find some of the top reviewers who have put a lot of thought into their descriptions about what they are tasting and see if you can get some ideas there.
