Driving up from San Diego to LA tomorrow to pick up my BT allocation and run some errands with my wife up in the city. I keep hearing about this burger at Father's Office so I'm gonna check that out, but if there was one or two absolute must go to beer bars what would you say they are?

If your gonna be on the 405 then stop in at Beachwood BBQ & brewing in Long Beach. A 10 minute detour well worth it. Great food and great beer line-up.

And if you're going to be at Beachwood, hit up Congregation Ale House or Federal Bar (if you're feeling fancy).

Which Father's Office are you going to? I ask b/c each one has other good bars nearby.

solid question! The Culver City location is definitely bigger but the Santa Monica location is closer to better beer bars, in my opinion.

If you make it to the Santa Monica location, you need to check out The Daily Pint, West 4th and Jane, and Library Alehouse.

Here is a map to help you out, been putting it together since 2011: http://goo.gl/maps/skzsy

Stop off at Smog City in Torrance (literally 2 minutes off the 405 at Western) and try whatever they have on, especially the Chip Shot Porter if it's still on.

I second the Smog City Recomendation. While LA has a mere fraction of breweries in contrast to San Diego, and even fewer good ones. I would say that currently, honestly, and in my humble opinion, (granted currently debatable) that Smog City is the current best brewery in the City, or at a minimum, in the top 2 or 3 best in the city itself.

I used to use Beermapping a lot but it's really only up to date in the mid west which seems to be where their user base is. For example I checked Pasadena and saw that they still haven't added the Stone store or the newest Lucky Baldwins. There are half a dozen other places around there as well that would probably qualify by their standards that aren't shown. I'm not going to go through that whole map but I did notice that there are some places that have closed that are still on there (The Bucket and Sky Scraper for example). I still check it to see if something's been added that I haven't heard about yet but the best listing right now is the Ratebeer map (just open that in a browser other than IE). Not sure if it has some funny markers for all the Whole Foods locations on yours like it does with mine, kind of odd.

I'm with you, I'm a big fan of Smog City. Their beers are great, it's a cool tap room (in that it's really just a bar inside their brewery), and Monkish, another solid stop, is basically right across the street.

As for bars for OP, I'd really just recommend looking online for the tap lists of the best/most convenient places. LA is on the larger side, so the best place probably depends on where you're going while you're here. I like The Verdugo, Mohawk Bend, Beer Belly, Blue Palms, The Surly Goat, 38 Degrees, Tony's Darts Away, Library Alehouse, and The Glendale Tap, among several others.

Thanks for all the info. Actually going up tomorrow. I'll probably hit up Smog City. I'm gonna go to the Culver City location for Father's Kitchen.
