some of these winners seem so obscure. Two Tortuga's as the 2nd best Belgian-style strong dark ale....so weird. I had two tortuga's and it started off really nice but was not a world-class, award winning beer.
Granted, nobody's paying me to drink beer...just so thrown off by some of these results.

When I was just posting what I just posted, I paused for five minutes pondering what I was wanting to say after the Steel Reserve comment...and then after clicking "Post"...I saw what you posted. Two Tortugas!!! Really??? It wasn't even the fact that Supplication got 3rd in something...but the fact that Two Tortugas even gets mentioned...WOW! And props to Pale 31...such a solid pale ale. Congrats Firestone and Bruery! You guys deserve some of these awards.

i didn't read all the categories, but i did notice a few that i liked. e.g. ruthless rye, IMO, should win any rye beer contest, because the rye is so prominent. or the barrel aged stout, i like seeing barrel aged BORIS get props.

Congrats to Fat Head's and Hoppin' Frog... and everyone else...

What makes Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout a British-Style Imperial Stout?

The Brooklyn Brewery's registration papers - in the Brewers Association competitions, it's the brewery which decided in which category their beers are judged.

(If you comment concerns the "Chocolate" part of BCS's name - there is no chocolate in Brooklyn's stout, only roasted malts.)

What on earth is a Scottish-style beer? I've been the length and breadth of Scotland and drink innumerable pints of Scottish beer yet can't identify anything which sets them apart from English or Welsh beers.

Heeeeeeeeelllllllsssssssss Yea. Super stoked on our midsize brewery of the year win. Very nice to see Miss Pale and Pale 31 cleaning up the APA category. And after doing the same at GABF last year... I'm starting to call shenanigans on the judges!

Who said Scottish-style has anything to do with Scotland?

Im pretty sure that "Welsh Rabbit" has very little to due with Wales.

Its a name. Stop being so literal.

Well, there's your problem - you gotta come to the USA to find 'em. Ditto for "English muffins" and "English Racer" bicycles.

Much like any awards event, there is much to laugh and cry about. Freaking Icehouse taking a bronze in American Premium or Specialty Lager congrats to the dozen or so people still drinking it:wink: All kidding aside plenty of parody and obscurity on this list and look at the brew chains taking a metal or 6, Rock Bottom & Pizza Port...

Sad, I doubt my eyes will ever be laid upon so many of the winners on that list...most of which
I no longer have the energy or inclination to hunt down or special order...

Oh well, I can still console myself tonight with offerings from Stone, Unibroue..etc...

Those "dozen or so people" must really drink a lot of that beer, though - industry sources put Icehouse in the Top 20 brands in the US, with close to 1% of the total beer market (i.e., much larger than any craft beer label). It's MillerCoors fifth largest-selling brand.

Although, it seems sort of disingenuous for craft beer fans to ridicule a brand for it's "small" sales to begin with.

Oh, I believe you. Just because I'm not seeing these people doesn't mean it's not happening. My jaw still drops walking past Red Dog, thinking, who's drinking the Dog these days? Always been amazed by what sells and what does not, especially when the differences are minimal at best, hell Steel Reserve took the Gold in that category, who knew but hey THEY are the experts so it must be true...

We have a law called the "Trades Description Act" which states that all goods must be exactly as described
Just hope that BAs don't actually believe the nonsense about Scottish beer though, it's better than that.
