Maybe you got a fill of Zombie Dust on accident, cause I'm sure they hide kegs of that in the back too...

I guess I'm confused on why there would be "batch variations" shouldn't they all be the same?

i had a growler from the brewery given to me the other day, my first taste. it wasn't quite what i was expecting from what i'd read or what i know about citra beers in general. interesting to read these posts here. definitely not a bad beer, but not deserving of a 100 BA rating.

I have not been that happy with my growler fills at Casanova.

Being a smaller brewery has meant usually getting 6-10 different lots of any given variety throughout a years time. Different lots of the same hop can have big differences. Our hops come direct, which, for bigger breweries with more buying power, means they can personally select their one lot for the entire year. For smaller breweries, it can sometimes be simpler to get your hops through smaller brokers - this typically means they get the same lot the entire year as the broker typically purchases one or maybe two large lots of a particular variety. There are multiple reasons why even though we're a smaller brewery, we don't do that. One is that we're very close to being able to get our entire run hand selected and also, working directly is the only way I was able to get the hops for X-Hops.

The good news as far as Sue is concerned this year is that our Citra will be only 2 different lots, and one of those lots is my favorite lot of Citra in 3 years (this lot is in the last bottled Sue and will be making it's way back into the brewery shortly).

@TgBC any plans to bottle Sue soon? I love getting growler fills but the recent weather isn't permitting to head out your way.

I can attest, this last "batch", "lot", "variant"....is by far the best sue I've tried. When had fresh (back in mid sept?) I couldn't believe what I was drinking. I couldnt wipe the smile from my face. Easily worthy of the 100 BA ranking. Pretty much same could be said for the all mosaic hopped dbl ipa sosus, during that run. Now, I'm not sure I could've proclaimed this with other bottles/taps I've had of sue. While great, it didn't match the aromatic and flavor assault of citra hops..damn near perfect display. I haven't had anything close lately, including citra ninja and zombie dust.

And btw..they last brewed sue back in mid dec, should be bottled soon.

So my 3rd growler from Saturday, 12/28 was just as bad as the first two. This one I shared with 6 guys from our beer club and no one could finish a single glass so we dumped the remainder. Everyone agreed it smelled good, tasted good at first, then the back end had qualities of swamp water, algae, kale.

Fairly disappointing since all of us are from Iowa and it was our first taste of PS for 4 of us. The two that had tried it before said it was nothing at all like the PS from prior.

I'll have to give er a try tomorrow at el Bait. They had it on Monday when I was in but I had a cold so I couldn't taste anything.

Found it on tap tonight. A ton of watermelon. Really a different Sue taste. Still very tasty but certainly not that incredible citrus Sue flavor. Maybe just an "off batch". Maybe it's just growing pains from moving into a new brewhouse.

You're probably right. I typically get the stuff behind the shelves.
