Yeah me too, Ralph's artwork and a quote by Gonzo, had to try it, and I liked it.

The only other label buy was Ska's True Blonde Ale, didn't like the beer as much as the blonde

I keep looking at Caldera Mogli every time I am in the bottle shop. Everyone says it's bomb and the label is epic but the price is also epic..

First I have to say, I think it's hilarious that the OP, first response, and the last response all have dogs as their handle photo.

To the OP, absolutely. If I like the artwork I will buy it, unless I find it to be too expensive and/or I know absolutely nothing about the beer.

What do they want for it over on the East Coast?

If the beer has some sort of legit Heavy Metal reference (the real stuff, old school) then I'll generally buy it just to collect the empty bottle.

Thank you for crediting Steadman and not Hunter Thompson. If I hear one more person credit Thompson for those labels I might have to smack a bitch.

Once upon a time Old Rasputin single handedly opened my eyes to imperial stouts. On a whim I threw one into a mixed sixer just because I loved the label featuring the legendary mystic. Needless to say, I''m glad I did.

Of course everyone looks at the label, that's why people in marketing get paid the big bucks. That's why my mom wanted me to go into marketing when I was in high school. Obviously, before you knew what all the beer styles were by heart, you had to try things on a whim. Personally, I'm much more interested in the price and the style I'm in the mood for when purchasing beer, but we all had to start somewhere.
I personally believe that you shouldn't look at ratings before drinking a beer.
I haven't heard anyone give the credit to Thompson. That's one of the weirdest things I've ever heard of people doing.

I have never bought beer because of a label I have bought beer despite the label though.

Weirder than donkey shows or cannibalism? Running a liquor store for many years I've heard lots of things I wish I didn't.

I didn't take the question to suggest that someone should or would develop any type of loyalty and/or pay a premium for a beer strictly because of the label art. However, when assembling a mixed 6 pack for a Friday night, and feeling the urge to try something new, I don't think there's anything wrong with giving the benefit of the doubt to something you find aesthetically pleasing. Maybe it winds up becoming one of your favorites (as in my case with Old Rasputin), or maybe it's something you'll never buy again.

I do look at reviews sometimes prior to making new purchases, but primarily to get a sense of the actual characteristics to see if it seems like something I'd enjoy. I generally disregard the rating numbers because I want to form my own unbiased opinion. Plus I've read too many reviews where a beer is "punished" because it doesn't conform to the style well enough. Good is good in my book.

Ha! I'm sure you have. I've worked in two liquor stores, it's funny how people are when they are buying booze. And to think those cats are professionals at something in the real world.

My statement about how weird it is may have been way over the top. Jeffrey Dahmer is a bit weirder than the cat walking around talking about Thompson's artwork on the labels of Flying Dog beers. I think we both do agree that the ladder cat is dumb though.

Having gone to school for illustration (Hence why I run a liquor store now) I'm a huge fan of Steadman. But most of the Flying Dog labels do nothing for me. Now that I think of it neither do the beers. Maybe with the exception of Gonzo.

I bought Tallgrass' 8-bit Pale Ale because of the Pac-man on the can. It was one of the best purchases of 2013 because it introduced me to a brewery that doesn't disappoint. I've enjoyed their Buffalo Sweat, Ethose IPA, and that ridiculously delicious Zombie Monkie.

Completely agree, I think there are much better labels and beers throughout the industry. I also agree about Gonzo as well, but you should check out their Oyster Stout if you haven't already. I liked that one as well.

Was that the Pearl Necklace? Just the name makes me not want to drink it. Haha Plus I don't think it ever made it to Massachusetts.
