Yeah, I get that and I respect Thompson and Steadman. I just can't make the mental leap from those images to a pleasant craft beer experience. Judging from Flying Dog's popularity, I must be in the minority. I don't think they'll miss my business.

Yeah, they did seem a little odd. I just don't like them even now. They just look like soda labels, which goes with the fact that they make non-alcoholic sodas and sell them in similar packaging. I just feel that they are missing something. I see the Andygator and Abbey Ale everywhere and I don't like them either. Mediocre labels for mediocre beer (at least from what I can gather) and I don't say that often. Let's just say there is a long, long list of companies and beers that I would rather try first.

One of the best hot sauces I've had in recent memory was called See Dick Burn. It had a stick figure drawing on the label...very juvenile - but a goddamn hot, decent, fiery sauce. I'm willing to look beyond the label.

Cool art like Clown Shoes beers is "cool"....and I do like their stouts. But I'd be happy with BCBS, KBS, Parabola in a plain brown bottle if it was available!

Agreed. Evil Twin's other labels are all pretty awesome, and the whole idea behind this beer in general is a joke. I highly doubt he put that beer on the market thinking the label would make for a good selling point.

That's actually one of my favorite labels. Hilarious and I know two of the dudes on there.

Great beer does not need a fancy label, celebrity endorsement or exorbitant marketing campaign. Just make it and we will find you.....word of mouth is the best marketing money can buy.

Hmmm.... Rather than mention crappy labels, maybe it's fun to mention one or two good ones?

There's a new(-ish) brewery out of Orange County called Bottle Logic that has their stuff locked down - clean aesthetic and consistent design. (It's all this kinda proto WW2 bomber pin-up/'Pacific Rim' thing...) And the beers are tasty too.

And since we're in the neighborhood, The Bruery gets points for design elegance and consistency in branding.

That's two off the top of my head. I could probably list more.........

I would like to say that it dosent matter to me but it does. There are so many choices out there that are similar, the label makes a difference. Even though it's petty I've already decided that I will not buy a Green flash beer until they change the new label they are coming out with. I have 90 other choices of breweries in San Diego so I can make foolish decisions as such.

Nah. Never judge a book by it's cover. I'm constantly introduced to new beers without seeing the labels. I do, though, save the bottles with cool lables. I have to agree with ya that there are some pretty bad label designs out therr..

Uintas has both. Baba looks almost like that generic beer label pictured earlier in this thread, while their Dubhe label is a beauty. It caught my eye from the bottom shelf at my local liquor store. It's been true love ever since ...

"A few riders are already pedalling around. Smiling, waving. There are a few I don't know. Good riders? Bad riders? You can tell good riders from their faces, bad riders from their faces too - but that only goes for riders you already know."

    Same goes for beer.

Label Art is the main reason I haven't bought anything from Hoppin' Frog or Lost Coast. I look at the terrible artwork on Lost Coast's stuff and just -know- it's not a good beer (not that a tangerine beer sounds good in the first place).

    I mean, really... http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7215/6868065298_9124544eff_h.jpg

Maybe they just have no taste in art and no idea of what looks good...or bad.

And, don't forget Lawson's. If you knew nothing of it, the label would make you think it was brewed by a 13 year old in their garage.

Short's labels are so generally so captivating that I will buy a generic pils/lager based on the label alone.
