We share the same bday so happy bday to him! The beer that actually got me into craft beers was New Castle, so I would suggest something like that or a pale ale. Maybe even some dirt wolf.

He's turning 21. Get him a suit and teach him how to tie a tie. You sound like the dad in the Breakfast Club that gave the kid a carton of cigarettes and told him to smoke up.

But no I would definitely start him with Pale ales. Sierra Nevada is an obvious classic, Lagunitas pale ale is a grapefruit bomb which will spark up his taste buds, along with victory headwater and their prima pils is also very tasty. I personally would'nt start him on the SN variety pack because I doubt a beginner craft drinker would like a belgian ipa or a black ipa right off the bat. Pale ales are the best way to introduce people into craft IMO. Then start them onto the hops eventually leading to some Flower Power off tap. Pretty hard to beat the ultra citrusy Flower power off tap once he gets the taste of hops

I'd go with whatever your kid likes, take him to a brew pub and hang out.. try some brew and have a bite to eat. Maybe go to the bottle shop afterwards and based off what he likes snag a few bottles

It goes down smooth, don't need a mixer (I'm 25 and drink bourbon neat so maybe I'm used to any burn) and it's 40% ABV. That's a great combo if you are in college.

This would definitely be a memorable and thoughtful day

For some reason the college age kids around here buy the hell out of Gulden Draak. Also, it's fancy looking, high ABV, and sweet enough to not be off putting to a newbie.

If not that then I also say Yuengling.

Well since he had probably never drank alcohol before, i'd go with something low abv.

A simple Tactical Nuclear Penguin will certainly leave a lasting impression.

Victory Variety case or any variety case for that matter. Gives him a chance to experiment with more styles early on.

I would avoid IPA's unless he's been drinking craft already. My son is 20 and I've already sat down with him on a few occassions and shared some home brew. He likes blonde ales, wheat beers, porters and saison. The first time I gave him a sip of Modus Hoperandi he told me I could keep my pine twig and grapefruit dirt flavored beer. I've let him sample different IPA's and each time they are just too much for his pallet. On the other hand, he did like Prima Pils.

Can't believe nobody's recommended a 40 of Olde English. Hand him the beer, tell him to chug it like a boss. If he doesn't, then you should probably be shopping for wine or spritzers.

Everyone is different. I'd ask. A couple years ago when I turned 21, I still liked blue moon. Now I can't stomach the stuff. Took me about 2-3 weeks of being 21 to discover I loved Bell's Two Hearted and Ruination. Now I'm hunting whales and taking trips to Vermont all the time. On second thought, just give him a case of Natty and a bottle of Jack and call it a day lol.

Get him a case of Blue Moon. He'll think it's the nectar of the gods and eventually he'll move onto bigger and better.

Or you can give him a Prima Pils or Victory Lager. My dad loves those, and he's primarily a BMC drinker, for lack of a better term.
