This comes up time and time again. The standard response is always statements like:
"Drink what you like, when you like" or
"I have A/C, I drink stouts all summer"
So, I think most BA's don't really have any rules set in stone, it's more up to the breweries when they release their non-year round dark beers. Personally, I enjoyed the hell out of my Parabola last night, but I would think it would the perfect beer for a cold snowy night by the fire.

Sure as long as you include porter and stouts in same basket. I always enjoyed the dark beer first, since I usually drink inside the weather or season does not matter. I never wanted a beer when working or mowing the lawn.
I mow and then I take a shower and then I pop a beer (if I want one). Not one to drink RIS allot, mainly due to pricing. Though Samuel smith imperial stout is mighty good beer. There has NOT been a time since I started Home brewing, that I not had a porter in rotation. Though dark milds are my kick ATM.

Thats not a myth. It's a fact. Michael Jackson wrote a whole chapter on it one time.

Are we talking about drinking (ie several pints at a go) or simply enjoying a glass or two which is neither here nor there? If I'm hot (does happen here from time to time) or thirsty (happens most of the time) then I look for a long drink which in the beer sense means low ABV. pretty obvious as over around 4% ABV beer dehydrates faster than it rehydrates which rather defeats the purpose.
I'm quite happy to drink the odd pint of stout on a hot day but not for the purpose of cooling off.

OP... I'm just curious how you relate saisons and rauchbiers. They're not even from the same country originally. Nor the same colors, or flavors, etc. Stouts are good.

I can drink a big stout anytime, but when it's 95 degrees and the humidity reaches 105, it's the last thing I would want... I certainly prefer it the other way and definitely find myself reaching for lighter beers in those circumstances.

They are related (to me) only in the sense that they are beers that I'll drink if offered, but they are not styles that I would actively seek. I'll drink them. But I don't necessarily love them. They don't flip my boat.

Stout, stout, the magical fruit. The more you drink, the more you ... ? (Sorry. I couldn't resist!)
Seriously though, it doesn't matter what season it is. Stouts have always been a favorite of mine. Gotta have it when you gotta have it!

OP, you live in Jersey. Try coming down to South Carolina on any given summer day when its 93 degrees and insane humidity. You will take a cold IPA over a stout after a day of working outside.

Yeah, this is what I was going to say. I don't find myself craving stouts as much during hot weather (for the same reason that I rarely want hot soup during the same period of time), but I'm certainly not against drinking them, and if I do get a craving, I'll drink one, weather be damned.

now baltic porters I will drink 9-10 months a year at any time. I do enjoy a thick stout in the summer just at nighttime when its cool...preferably on my recliner in the ac.

When it's 95% humidity and 80 degrees INSIDE at 9pm, you tell me how good that 55 degree, full bodied and roasty beer tastes.

I've got nothing against ignoring "beer seasons" and drinking what you like, when you like. That's how it should be. But dear god, that kind of beer just does not sound even the smallest bit appealing in that circumstance.

After I walked in fairly warm sunny weather, 85f ish, I got valiant barrel aged first flight (like an old ale and 15%abv) and it tasted so good but then I'm like I bet this will be even better warmed up so I set it aside and got la folie which was for sure more refreshing. as has been stated drink what you want when you want.
