I agree for the most part. I really would not take a bunch of FBS or TenFidy to the beach with me or stock my fridge with it for a summer cook-out. However, a nice sipping stout in the evening is just as enjoyable in August as it is in January (as long as the AC is cranking).

There are many people who regard a cup of tea to be the most refreshing drink on a hot day. That's something we learnt from India where they know a thing or two about heat.
But in the days of the Indian Empire the troops drank Porter as their main tipple .It seemed to be OK for them.

Funny...I do drink hot tea year round, though less in the summer. But it's a much different texture and flavor than a big stout. It's not a thick, viscous drink, and the taste of it doesn't remind me of something being toasted.

Love BA Stouts, not a daytime summer beer for the beach, but a nice night capper like a fine Scotch or bourbon.

Last year I asked my dad how his summer was (he lives in Wisconsin) and his reply was "Good, I think it was on a Tuesday this year"

I rarely drink stouts (or anything heavy) in the warmer months. Just a preference. I dont keep many stouts in the cellar, not a style that I personally think improves (often the opposite). So, I tend to drink my bottles down by the time spring rolls around. I even go as far as trading out whats left from the winter for lighter, more refreshing beers for the summer. Not cause some book or person said thats how it should be done, just what my taste buds want.

I agree with you on this one. I'm all for drinking stouts in the summer if I'm just sitting around (inside or outside), but if I'm trying to cool off after mowing the lawn or after exerting myself in some way then stouts are not what I'm reaching for. I don't even understand how people are saying IPA's on this thread either. For me a "cooling off" beer is going to be a pilsner, lager, kolsch, or some other lighter beer.

I don't make my main breakdown of beer in terms of color, or flavor, or how it was fermented- I do it by gravity. This sort of contextual issue is a pretty good reason why- I'm all about 'hell yeah' to stouts in the summer, but like others in this thread, the ones I'm thinking of are the lower gravity stouts and porters. Along the same lines, when it's hot outside (or inside:wink:), or when I'm active, I don't want a high gravity beer of any sort (DIPA, Barleywine, Quad, etc.), and that's where I lump Imperial Stouts; as a subset of high gravity beers, not of stouts.

When the sun goes down and the temperatures drop, then I'm game for anything, though.

Stouts WERE femented using the blood of Unicorns instead of water. that is why no stout today is true to style!

Not sure how some don't see the simple correlation between Stouts and the winter season, and India Pale Ale during the summer season. Stouts can be rich and viscous with chocolate, oatmeal, coffee. And the alcohol isn't hidden very well usually. The beer is served at cellar temp and tends to have a warming sensation going down, much like a sip of bourbon. That fits well with a cold winter night. India Pale Ales are everything floral and citrus, sometimes fizzy, and taste superb going down cold. Such a nice fit for summer. I find most single IPAs (or even a wheat pale ale) light and refreshing, excellent for a night hanging out with friends talking about cars. I thinks ok to drink whatever variety whenever you want, but if you love chugging a 10% double stout on a hot July afternoon, I think you are in the minority.

I like my stouts when it's cold
I like their flavor very bold
I like my stouts when it's hot
I like my stouts a whole whole lot
I'd drink them in a bar
I'd drink them with a tsar
I'd drink my stouts any where
    Anytime without a care

most oatmeal or milk stouts are pretty light and refreshing. and dare i say guiness around here without getting my head ripped off? or even throw porters in the mix. by big heavy i mean RIS clearly, and cloying i mean thick syrupy and sweet.

So, are you saying that the Pegasus Blood Stout that's currently in my fermenting tank won't be true to style, either?
