I have access to Tired Hands growlers and am in a pretty good distro area, are good shelf beers in quantity or TH growlers likely to get it done for cantillon? I've picked up a pretty good sense of what level different domestics are on but am having trouble fitting imports into the hierarchy.

I think in general, you are looking at something like the following

Rose/Kriek/Iris $25 ish of limited shelf or brewery only releases (probably something like 1:1 with Backyard Rye?)
St. Lam $30 ish of very limited shelf or brewery only releases (BCBCS or Black Note?)
Fou Foune $35-40 ish of limited shelf or brewery (though it also trade 1:1 with something like Prop)

That sounds pretty reasonable, so I could maybe land a Fou Foune with 2 Tired Hands growlers, or a TH and an Abyss (as an example)?

Also, where does Classic Gueuze fall in that list?

Lastly, I would appreciate either some consensus or anecdotal support if anyone else would like to weigh in.

I think the aforementioned is pretty accurate. Someone who gets Shelton Bros distribution may be better at giving insight on how long it lasts, or how limited is. If you want some basic Cantillon check out BIAB

I got a St. Lam for some HF growlers and bottles that was part of a larger trade.

I do not think you can get a Fou Foune with two Tired Hands growlers, to be honest.

You could certainly land one with some Tired Hands bottles.

Agreed with Shane, no 2 Tired Hands growlers is = 1 Fou. Maybe 2 Tired Hands bottles. Maybe.

Fair enough ... so i'm gathering that Fou Foune is to Cantillon as DL is to FFF? As in, other Cantillons will trade roughly $4$ with other generally limited distros but Fou Foune takes a bit extra on the rarity scale, is that right?

I got a Fou for 2 bottles of TH Out of the Emptiness + 1 Allagash Merveilleux. The trader gave me a Westy 12 as an extra so that offsets the Merveilleux. OotE was 6 bottles/person. With the later releases of 2-3 bottles/person, you should be able to do 1 bottle + 1L growler of something more sought after (Light that Spills... or Mago Tago).

I guess you can look at it that way. Classic Cantillons are like ZD; St. Lam, Vigneronne (probably closer to Fou), Cuvee de Champ are like Permanent Funeral; Fou is like DL (strictly on relative difficulty, but it irks me to see the 2 together in a comparison...hahaha). Of course, then you have those BVDL of Cantillon...yeah.

Yeah this is strictly a relative difficulty comparison, not at all equating the two wildly different beers. That definitely helps shore it up for me. TH bottle releases are a bit too intense for my taste so I guess I'll have to settle for the 'everyday' Cantillons for now, or maybe offer over $4$ and see if I get lucky.

If you can get to TH, you can get to Monk's. They have Cantillon from time to time and sell them for very reasonable price ($30-35 for 750ml), but on premise consumption only. Just call ahead before you go to make sure they have some.

Thanks for the suggestion, I've been meaning to get there for a very long time (not just for Cantillon) and it just hasn't been in the cards so far. Theresa's Next Door apparently has Cantillon from time to time as well, unfortunately neither are really easy for me to make it to (nor is TH but I've been in their neighborhood recently by chance).

I think $4$ is sort of a hard way to think about Cantillon trades just BC prices vary so much. And in Belgium they are pretty cheap.

Easier to think about it in terms of comps. Whatever it takes to trade for a Prop (currently) is about what it takes to trade for a Fou.

Something like ...Hunaphu is probably like a St. Lam.maybe something a bit more rare like Cherry Rye.

    And so on.

Teresa's Cantillon bottle selection is quite good. I've had Fou Foune, St. Lam, Vig, etc. there before.

What do you guys think? Will a box with one each of Bell's BA Cherry, Backyard, KBS, Black Note, BBPt5th, and BB4D be able to land FF plus maybe another Loon? Any LPs as the plus?

I have a regular trade partner going on two years, I ship TH and Forest & Main growlers for Cantillon's. I also set aside bottles when I can make releases as well. We're both happy with the arrangment so I think it's more about finding the right trade partner. If you're looking for a one and done trade; 2 TH growlers for a FF, I agree with the above, prolly won't get done unless a limited bottle or two is in the conversation. good luck.

Thanks man, that's very helpful; really gives me a good sense of it. When the time comes that I'm not laying low from trades, hopefully I'll have a good bottle or two available to sweeten a growler or two and i can get it done.

I recently got a Fou for a BA Wee Heavy from Alesmith. So I would agree with the value placed above.
