He was talking about pounds (#). But the point is that you can scale recipe grain bills using volume ratios. A simpler (and correct) way to show the example would be...

    10 pounds x (8.5 gallons / 5 gallons) = 17 pounds

so im looking at this recipe for a 5 gallon ipa. It says the grain bill is 12.5 american vienna, 0.5 Briess Caramel, and 0.5 caramel pils. so if i was to boost this up to 8.5 then it would be 21.3# american vienna, 0.9# briess caramel, and 0.9# caramel pils?

Yes! This and hopville/brewtoad absolutely helped me start creating my own recipes. Brew some of your own recipes and give them out to friends/family and see what they think and also enter a local/cheap BJCP competition and get some good constructive feedback. Don't worry about making a bad beer. We have ALL done it. Just go for it and have fun!!! Cheers!

Sort of. But hops utilization is sensitive to boil volume. And (starting) boil volume doesn't scale exactly, because boil-off rate (gallons boiled off per hour) doesn't scale. I'd recommend using brewing software of some kind for more precision in recipe design/scaling.

ill eventually get to the software. I just want a handle on it myself in case the power goes out hahaha

Personally, the software helped me get a handle on it. Some great free options are out there like brewcipher

If you have a recipe for t gallons and want to make it into a ten gallon batch, double everything. 10/5 is 2. If you wanted to do a 2.5 gallon batch, you would half everything. 2.5/5. So if you wanted to do an 8 gallon batch you would take multiply everything by whatever 8/5 equals.

If my power went out, I would hold off brewing for many other reasons.

    THIS!

This is the foundation for recipe formulation. Period. If you're truly interested in learning how to create a recipe, you MUST read Designing Great Beers.

or Hashtag if you're under 60 ...seriously, just fake recipes for the first couple years and then decide what you like.

All of the above - total bullshit. :grimacing:

Here's how almost everyone on this board really does it:

Get a standard dart board with numbers 1-20. Mount it on a bearing so you can spin it. Cut out several sheets of paper the same size, and marked similarly 1-20. In the first 19 slots, put "IPA." in slot 20, put "other." Affix sheet one to your dartboard, and give it a spin. Toss a dart. This chooses what you'll make. When you get the result, refer to the following chart:

    1. If IPA: Get a new sheet. in the first 19 slots, put "overhopped abomination with tons of added sugar and no crystal malt." In slot 20, put "add crystal malt and skip the sugar." Give it a spin and toss a dart. Brew whatever comes out, unless it lands on slot 20. In that case, spin again and toss another dart.
    2. If NOT IPA: Re-affix a new sheet marked similarly to your first sheet, give it another spin and toss another dart.
