Maybe if they brewed DirtWolf w/o the rye. It does have that big floral hop burst up front, but it's not a resinous and thick as Enjoy By.

I suspect something that might make Enjoy By different: My guess is that they probably add pale extract/sugar after the boil to give the yeasties more food to eat to up the abv but also add some sweetness w/o maltiness, allowing the dry-hopping to really build a hoppy body that doesn't have to compete with malt. If they upped the ABV by mashing more malt, you'd end up with a much more midwestern "hopslam/dreadnaught" style body & mouthfeel.

IMO dirt wolf is not nearly as smooth as enjoy by.

Screw hype. The Truth from Flying Dog is the most like Enjoy By. Do a side by side. I'm not a homer but both DIPAs are very, very similar. Hold on I think I have a pic from my side by side...

I preferred the aroma on The Truth, yet preferred the smoothness of Enjoy By. Both are, like I said similar.

The Truth is something I've seen in stores locally, I will seek it out.

Find it Fresh! The older it gets, more of the Summit hops breaks through. The freshest it is more of the Citra comes through. Plus it has a nice malt body to like Enjoy By...just not as smooth.

I have also tasted similarities between Dirtwolf and Enjoy By. To my palate, they have comparable proportions of dankness, citrusy-ness, and sweetness; and similar specific notes of each. I think (if my memory is not failing me) they look similar, too. More yellow than orange on the DIPA color spectrum.

Having this particular view of matters, I felt a pleasant, small validation when seeing this video the other day:

Wow, this thread Is all over the place. IMO enjoy by is really overated. Hoptimum, to me, is similar but better. As far as it being like dirtwolf...not even close. These are my opinions and are in no way meant to be trollish. Enjoy by is good but it tastes...idk...generic

I thought ENJOY BY was different each time? or is it the same beer with different dates? Need to know, thanks.

Different hop bill each batch based on availability and freshness.

So all of the comparisons everyone above made have been for nothing other than people listing their favorite IPAs that might have tasted like one batch or another.

Huh. I could have sworn there was a touch of rye. Maybe it just reminded me of a stronger version of Smitten.

The differences are minute- it's not like they're substituting a major hop with a completely different hop. They designed the beer so that very similar hops could be used to replace other similar hops, mostly on the dry-hopping end. But they did not design it to taste differently every batch, which is very clear by their marketing. If they had done so, they would have promoted that fact and used it as a selling point.

Enjoy By was brewed to taste and smell the same every batch. To the point where the average human can't detect the difference.

99.9% of the differences we "detect" are due to the age of the beer when we are drinking it.

Our comparisons are based more on how Enjoy By tastes at 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, etc. more than based on the hop bill used during brewing.

That's definitely not the impression I got from talking to a Stone rep the other night. He said they go by what's available and what's fresh so that they can make the best beer possible, regardless of hop variety.

    I enjoyed 2/14/14 much more than 4/20/14 and 7/4/14.

4/20/14 and 7/4/14 tasted very similar. That's because those two used the exact same hop bill.

I guess in the end it's really all up to your own palate, and either way Enjoy By is between a way above average IIPA to fantastic IIPA.

I can't stand rye, but I love Dirt Wolf. I was enjoying one as I typed that.

I agree, wouldn't go as far to say that the differences are so minor you can't detect them some though, if you look. That may be the case, but I wouldn't assume it. I would say the differences are so small you're probably not going to remember them, even if you've had every single batch exactly three weeks before the enjoy by date (arbitrary number to highlight freshness and no variation in terms of how close the beer is to the enjoy by date). If you want to see a beer that really changes due to recipe variation, try the Surrette batches and take notes. Differences are pretty subtle, but also obvious and memorable, unlike Enjoy By.

Yeah, I get that. And they use so many hop varieties that it would be near impossible to figure out which one or two were substituted to effect the change.

Off topic, but I was disappointed by Mikkeller's Single Hop IIPA's- felt like they were overpowered by malt so you couldn't really detect the hop aromas/flavors unless you had them super fresh or on tap (yeah, right).

So Surrette does a good single hop series?

Damn, everyone jumping on the 'enjoy by is nothing like dirtwolf' train. I just pointed out that they have similar dankness. Didn't mention flavor profile, lol. I'd personally rather have a fresh dirtwolf over an enjoy by (especially since I get a 4 pack for the price of an enjoy by). Latest enjoy by was good but don't really enjoy that oniony taste that hits pretty hard in some batches.
