Hey everyone. My step dad's 60th birthday is in a few weeks and I'm considering finding him a birthyear beer. The thing is, I'm not sure what to look for. My first thought was Tom hardy but that is too new of a beer. What beer should I look for that isn't a vinegar bomb now?

I can say find him some Hamm's or Wiedemann's just saying Wiedemann's because well, it's my Great Uncle's recipe. Which I'm sure is terrible by today's standards.

I can't imagine tracking down a beer from 1954 will be an easy task, old lambics maybe?
Keep us informed, best of luck OP, I'd like to see this happen.

Certainly no American beer from 1954 will have survived this amount of time and be drinkable. I think you need to look toward Europe.

@BeRightBock nails it for domestic beers. Good luck finding one. A beer can collecting sight has a member who has formed a "Iron Guts Union" that "tastes" the occasional full cans of beers they acquire. If I came across a birth year beer I might give it a shot but at my age...uh not likely :grimacing:

Hope this works out for you OP. This thread makes me think I should get on tracking down a couple birth year beers since my birth year is 1989 I should work on that before its too late.

That's damn close enough to my birthyear to tell you that I wouldn't want any beer from then. Spend the coin on something good now. Don't make the old guy choke down some swill and lie about it to make you feel better.

Best bet: get him some DFH 60 Minute IPA.
Next year you can get him some 61 minute

Good luck finding something for his 62nd though.

I am a can collector. In the last year I have broke out some real gems at tastings I host. How about a vintage 1991 Cook's or a 1998 Sturgis Rally Harley Davidson? I don't think age did anything to hurt them. They were awful when I first bought them. The Cook's had been aging in my garage attic for 20 years. The HD was part of a small collection I recently picked up.

I am sure someone on this site could hook you up with some old Billy Beer.

As much as I hate to admit it I was almost of legal drinking age when Billy Beer was around and I still see un-opened ones a flea markets  Now if you get to something in an early 60's vintage (yeah I'm an old fart) let me know

Better yet, find a vintage bottle of something cool from 1954, clean and sanitize the bottle, and recap it with something fresh inside (if you don't homebrew, A- you should, and B- a little cleanser and sanitizer and a bottle capper will run a total of about $20, mostly for the capper)

edit: another idea is find something from 1975, the year he turned 21 and could legally drink. still not an easy task, but more doable than 1954.

and then we're going to find 60 year old beer sufficiently appealing to celebrate a birthday? Right. There is not a beer on the planet or one ever made that would be predictably decent at 60. Sure, there are anomalies but one can't rely on ever finding one! Buy him a shirt and tie or a nice belt.

Due to time, I've decided to go with getting him some 60 minute and opening a nice gem from my cellar.

I just got some old cans today (from a garage sale) and when I was washing the dust off a 1987 Daytona commemorative can by Harley Davidson 'Heavy Beer', it started leaking from the bottom. I just took a sip out of curiosity and it tasted like normal mediocre beer. Not sure if it is worth more, if anything if left unopened, but will probably give it to a HD fan anyway.

Nebraska Brewing recently released a beer that had been aged in 50 year old brandy barrels at the time. How about a whiskey, rum, Brandy, Cognac, or Armagnac instead? I have Armagnac from 1973 and I'm sure you can find something older.
