For everyone interested, the clear winner for me was the 2012 Bourbon Dark Lord. It was a bit of an upset, but that beer was just stunning!

 

Where's all the Rare?

 

Beer Advocate tasting in Columbus on Saturday. Some of the highlights were the Colossus, Abacus & Sucaba side by side, Parabola, Vanilla Bourbon Dark Lord, Uncle Jacob's, Bruery goodies, and Ghost Scorpion (just kidding).

There was also some really excellent home brew being shared, all of which tasted like really good commercial beers. It was a good time!

I really need more beer friends who could put together something like this. I've got a 2012 BA Vanilla Dark Lord and nobody to share it with.

what was the verdict on the head to heads??

 

- CBS beat out Dark Lord and 1414 unanimously, with some people having 1414 over DL and vice-versa (but they all went damn well together)
- We did 2 rounds of Pliny vs Heady Topper (with zombie vs blind pig in between)...the first round H.T. won, the second round Pliny won...it was 3:2 each time with one person switching their vote
-Zombie Dust unanimously destroyed the Blind Pig (which shocked me a bit...i hadn't had either in a little while but always remembered liking the blind pig more)
-Dreadnaught also crushed Mongo

 

I agree lol I have a bunch of stuff and no one to share it with I want to open up a king Henry, either my brandy DL or one of my vanilla DL

 

It was pretty close between the Cognac and Bourbon for me...I think I need to try 'em again.

sours a couple of us got into last night..
wasn't much light in there, but left to right (tasting order)-
cuvee de jacobins rouge, classic, lou pepe kriek, temptation, sanctification, beatification, consecration, supplication, geuze marriage parfait, oud beersel geuze & kriek.

highlight of the night - my wife finished a couple of the samples!
(definitely NOT her fav style..)

 

Today was the first meeting of the nascent Philly BA Tasting. We had, from left to right:

Heady, Zombie Dust, Galaxy White IPA, BA Imperial Schwarzt (Surprise of the tasting, IMO), 2010 Stone IRS, Fortuitous, BA Old Raspy 14, Cinco Anos, Boulevard Double Wide I.P.A., HF Society and Solitude #3, Arctic Devil Barleywine (my favorite surprise of the day), Sang Royal, Barrel-Aged Farmhouse Ale, HF Art, Triple Play IPA, Oui Oui (some BAs picked this for their favorite American sour ever!), Fruet (absolutely fantastic), Firestone Walker XV, Saison du Swamp, Humidor Series IPA (smelled like a Humidor, tasted like cedar), The Stoic, South Austin Belgian Style Pale Ale, 2012 Stone IRS, Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale.

 

This isn't really an event, but I went to Kaua'i recently -- right after 9 growlers were scheduled to land at my house. I drank 4 before I left and checked in 5 with me to enjoy on vacation.

There's pretty much nothing better than surreptitiously enjoying ~9 L of various Alpine, Pizza Port, and Hill Farmstead on a beach in Hawai'i. If there is, send me a BM so I can do it.
