The "tipping point" you mention is spot on. There's just too much great beer out there and too much that I haven't had the opportunity to try so I will run through my arsenal, especially if I've already had the beer, to acquire these new (to me) brews. And yes, I'm in Nebraska - there aren't many beers (if any, actually) brewed in Nebraska that I see people storming the trenches to get ahold of. There's the occasional special release that I can pick up to allow for some nice trade potential but it doesn't happen often. Nebraska Brewing Co. is the only brewery I've seen from around here on the ISO portion of the trade forum which is rather depressing.

I agree with the fresh beer being better statement. Even if it's a big 'ol heavy hitting stout that is labeled "hot" off the bat, chances are I'll like it better straight off the bottling line then cellared away for years. To add to that, I haven't had a ton of cellared beers - nothing passed 4-5 years at least so there are BAs who could topple my statement with their experience in this matter.

While in general I agree with your freshness assertion, I thought Rare was just a bit too hot right out of the gate, and the subsequent bottles I've been lucky enough to try about 6 months and one year in were definitely more suited to my tastes than the freshly tapped one I had at Goose Island on the release day. King Henry was great fresh, and I am going to keep trying to get my hands on bottles every month or so until I don't like it any more, or I think it's close to going downhill. I have two left, and I'm opening one of them in a couple weeks.

that's fair. i like heat, though, so i may have felt differently. the only time i've had rare, i thought it was excellent.

i honestly think king henry has nowhere to go but down.

Probably true. Just a matter of how far down and how fast.

I agree, it drinks great and I don't think age is going to make it any better, although it might make it worse. I think Rare has peaked now as well, and would suggest drinking them all within the next 6 months to a year, that is you know, if you actually care about how the beer tastes.

    "16 bottles of King Henry"

    "I'm not hoarding this beer"

Antwrestler19 - " ask the handful of trade partners that received the majority of my KH allotment"

I was in that handful , and I appreciate it ,such a great beer -
I have one left and it's going to be my "Apocalypse Beer" , when the shit goes down.. KH will be in me belly ..If I were you I would hold onto any you have left ..trading for one is almost impossible anymore..

    Cheers !

This is why I always scoff at the idea that anyone is hoarding KH to increase the trade value. I'm keeping my remaining bottles because I love it.

Originally I had the idea that I'd hold onto a few to see what people would offer in the future - I'm sure plenty of people did the same with Rare (I think I saw a picture of like, 28 bottles in one instance) and are doing it with countless other beers so I definitely can't be the first to consider this.

Also, as I mentioned before, I drank/shared two of mine right away and then traded the rest away (even extra'd one, as I mentioned before) save the two bottles that I have left in my cellar. I don't view this as hoarding at all....just because I wanted to hold on to a couple bottles of a beer to see what they may go for in the future does not qualify me as a hoarder. I just wanted to see how others handle this situation, not be criticized for what I do with the beer that I rightfully drove around town for and paid for out of my pocket.

This is absolute textbook hoarding. Least you can do is own it...

Think about it - you bought 16 bottles of a beer that is very thinly distributed and in huge demand. It doesn't even matter what you do with it at that point, but hoping that it increases in trade value represents everything wrong with the beer trading community today.
