I will be heading to Atlanta/ Asheville, some breweries...wondering if I should pack empty growlers, as I have a ton.

    1. In either of these areas, do they fill any growlers
    2. do they do 32oz growlers
    3. any recommendations to get some filled?

If anyone wants anything from CT in these areas shoot me a PM.

For Atlanta, you should be alright getting growlers filled that arent branded by the place you are getting them filled.

Ale Yeah, Total Wine, and a ton of other growler spots around town all fill other growlers.

32oz and 64oz is the standard around here.

    Burnt Hickory
    Orpheus
    Blue Tarp
    Three Taverns
    Monday Night
    Red Brick
    Terrapin
    Sweetwater

That said, you cant get growlers filled at the breweries. You will have to go to a growler store to get them filled. At least in GA.

Asheville's laws require you to use the brewery's branded growler only, but some places will skirt the law.

Atlanta, the requirement is glass, 32 or 64oz only, and fitted with the government warning label. Some places have stickers they can put on if your bottles don't have the warning label printed on it, but not all. Best bet is to make sure you have that. As said, breweries cannot fill any glassware besides a sample glass for tasting/tours, no growlers or sales for off premise. To go sales are not allowed anywhere in Georgia, that goes for brewpubs as well.

Yep...be ready to buy a different growler at every brewery in Asheville that you want a growler fill from. Its a real pain in the ass, that's for sure! Dont miss Wicked Weed in Asheville, IMO the best brewery in Asheville and possibly the southeast, maybe not the most historic, but the best brewery for variety and good sours. Reminds me of a local brewery you would find in Portland Oregon instead of a simple brewery from the southeast. After Wicked Weed, I think the breweries in downtown Asheville drop off pretty quick. LAB isnt bad, but sometimes their food is better than their beer. Hi-Wire has become popular, but I wasn't that impressed with their beers that much. One World is a last stop after you check out the other breweries (and don't trust the beer list on their website). ABC/Asheville Brew Company is pretty bad nowadays...run of the mill beers with nothing special to set them apart from the rest of the brews in A-ville. Green Man is a very traditional English style brewery with standard brews that stop exciting me 15 years ago. French Broad isnt that far from downtown, but I find their beers to be standard, drab and boring. Highland is a great spot a little out of downtown, but their beers are locally legendary despite the fact that they generally only produce their standard brews and a seasonal for each season. Pisgah is my next favorite Asheville brewery, but they are actually nearby in Black Mountain. Burial is a newish brewery that many folks have highly recommended, and Twin Leaf has made a name by using local malts and hops for some of their brews...but I havent checked either of these out yet. That's the meat of the Asheville scene, but there are other breweries I didnt mention too. Make sure to stay the night in downtown and truly enjoy the nightlife, good brews and great music scene!

No matter the Sour or if you have WW branded growlers, WW will not do Growler fills on their Sour's. However, right now their "milk it" stout is worth a growler fill, IF you buy (rent) their growler, they won't fill any non WW growlers. Don't know of a single Brewery up here in Asheville that will fill your growler. Now, Appalachian Vintner's I believe will. So check the bottle shops, either AV or Bruisin Ales. Probably call first.

My favorites in order would be Wicked Weed, Pisgah, Burial (thur, fri, sat only), Highland, then it is beer specific, like Hi Wire makes an amazing Lager, Wedge has a great Pilsner, One World has everything drinkable, just nothing out of this world good, Twin leaf is ok if you like a style they're brewing, but you better really like the style, Green Man's ESB is outstanding, etc..

It has to be glass? Are you sure about that? A lot of places are selling the aluminum and plastic ones at the growler shop. I would find it hard to believe that they would sell those and then not fill them. My friend has one of those stainless steel DrinkTanks and gets it filled all the time.

Also, some will fill a 750ml growler, but you'll be paying the 32oz price.

By law, yes, but plenty of people skate it. We fill stainless ones too as long as there's a label of some kind, but with plastic we only fill those with soda. The long neck 32oz growlers we fill and just cut it short, since they're technically larger.

As in the swingtop ones? And thanks for the clarification on the glass.
