"Modern Times Beer is stoked out of our frickin' gourds to announce the release of our first barrel-aged beer. Monsters' Park--our hulking, cantankerous 13% ABV imperial stout--was aged in two different barrels: Rye whiskey & Tennessee whiskey. A third version was created by adding some of our house roasted Black House Blend coffee to two barrels of the rye version.

All three versions turned out remarkably, spectacularly well. The rye version has the most aggressive barrel character, sporting a huge rye nose, with loads of vanilla, oak, & spice on the palate, and a finish that goes on for days; it'll probably hit its peak in about 6 months and could stand to age as long as 2 years or more. The Tennessee whiskey version is the most complete & it's ready to drink now: the barrel character is beautifully integrated, with an emphasis on caramel, maple, & vanilla notes. The coffee rye version is the most complex of the three: the coffee perfectly compliments the roasted notes in the beer and mingles effortlessly with the powerful rye character; this one should not be aged since the coffee will fade relatively quick. In sum, these are cockstaggering beers.

    BOTTLE PURCHASE DETAILS:
Beginning on Wednesday, September 24th 2014 at 10am, you will be able to purchase tickets good for up to 4 bottles of the rye version, 4 bottles of the Tennessee whiskey version, and 2 bottle of the coffee rye version. You will be able to pick-up your bottles at the Lomaland Fermentorium tasting room during the period from 12pm on Tuesday, September 30th until 10pm on Friday, October 31st. Unfortunately, no exceptions can be made to either the bottle limit, nor the pick-up window. You cannot pick-up your bottles at the North Park Flavordome.

    RELEASE PARTY:
We will be hosting a casual release party on Tuesday, September 30th, 2014 at the Lomaland Fermentorium tasting room starting at 12pm. This will be the easiest and most fun day to pick-up your bottles. We will have some fun stuff on-tap, and it'll be a damn good time. If you've been meaning to visit us to buy some of our super rad tulip glasses, a couple bags of our awesome house roasted coffee, and a shirt or two, this is the time to do it.

    ADDITIONAL DETAILS:
In order to pick-up your bottles, you will need to show your valid photo ID; it must be your ID and the name must match that of the ticket buyer (i.e. only you can pick up your bottles). Any sales that attempt to work around the bottle limit will be voided. Only purchase bottles if you are 100% positive you can pick-up your bottles within the pick-up window; any bottles not picked up before October 31st will be surrendered back to Modern Times Beer."

Not sure about the bottle count. I'm sure I'm maxing out  Tried the variants at the anniversary party and they were absolutely amazing. I'm glad I saw their Instagram post, because I had a different date marked in my calendar (http://moderntimesbeer.com/blog/year-2-predictions-speculation), so I would be extremely mad if I missed it.
PS. Anyone knows what happened to the Bourbon variant?

That is what a credit card that you pay around the middle of the month is for man. Gotta stagger those CC payments.

Bummed I won't be able to partake, just can't get down to SD to pick 'em up. OC brewers needs to step it up to satisfy my BA beer needs.

    Bottle counts for this sale:
    Approx. 1,000 bottles of rye
    Approx. 800 bottles of Tennessee
Approx. 400 bottles of the coffee rye

We're also holding back about 20% of the total for future events, anniversaries, etc...

I'm going to write a blog post about the bourbon version, but basically we had some concerns about a possible brett infection with it (they were the only barrels that had previously held beer). Rather than risking selling bad bottles, we decided to pitch our sour culture into it. So hopefully in about 6 months we'll have a bourbon barrel-aged sour imperial stout.

However, the bourbon version was still tasting super good, so we just filled 12 extremely awesome, freshly dumped Heaven Hill bourbon barrels with a new batch of Monsters'. That should allow us to release a bourbon version in 3-6 months.

    Cheers & thanks,
    Jacob McKean

stoked for this. wish they pick up window was a bit longer, a la Alesmith which is usually 3 months.

as an aside, i heard Burbank is going to start doing nonstop flights to San Diego in October. definitely going to be utilizing that at some point in the future
