I'll be in San Diego for 5 days. We'll be popping in here and there for a pour and certainly do some bottle shopping. I've convinced the wife to dedicate one day to breweries. We'll be La Jolla which is close to Alesmith, Green Flash, Ballast Point, and St. Archer. I have to go to Alesmith to pickup some bottles I bought online so that's a must. I'm just torn where else to go.

I'd love to go to Alpine, but that would probably be the only other brewery besides Alesmith we hit given the length of drive. Just looking for some ideas here. Others I have on the mind are Modern Times, Coronado, Societe. Thanks in advance for any guidance.

You could hit up bottle craft or something as well for some minor bottle shopping, Just a thought.

I am from New England. Went on a Beer-cation there 2 years ago and did a lot. Do not, do not, do not miss an opportunity to go to the Stone Bistro. The best is in Escondido, but if you don't have enough time go to the Liberty Station one. They don't skimp on style or quality and although they might seem arrogant, the do serve many guest brews.

Do Modern Times and Stone, skip Coronado. Also hit Lost Abbey...

I'm from the east coast and only living in San Diego for 2 years.I live downtown which is walking distance to Ballast Point in Little Italy...besides Stone bistro in liberty station which is only 10mins by car I would say this is a must. Do t justbhit the breweries hit the great craft bars! If you make it downtown within 15mins of all you can go to ballast point(little italy), Karl Strauss(downtown), hamiltons tavern(south park), little bar, tiger tiger(north park) and if make it there belching beaver is around the corner basically..small but cool..

Part of me wants to tell you to skip north county all together, but some of those breweries are probably part of the reason you're stoked to come.

If you end up at Alesmith, could also cruise to Intergalatic and Legacy since they are literally on the way to Alesmith's tasting room.

If you can hit Societe and Alpine you would be doing yourself big time justice. From Societe to Alpine is no more than 30 minutes. Get Growlers of Pupil at Societe and then hit Alpine for bottles and growlers of the big three, Duet, Nelson and Pure Hoppiness, they should have at least two of them on for fills and usually will have two of the bottled versions for take out. If you have time to eat, make it lunch at the pub, really really good food and lots of beers on tap.

    Cheers,

Best bottle shopping would be Bine and Vine in Normal Heights.

When are you coming to San Diego?
More importantly, what beers are you bringing with you?

This. I'm from Central California and my normal MO is to be at Alpine when they open and then hit Societe on the way back toward SD. Alesmith is not that far from Societe so you could easily pick your bottles up next.

Whatever you do, end the night at Toronado.

If it were me and I had one day, here is what I would do:

Start by going up and having lunch at Stone Bistro in Escondido. They have decent - good taps and will be one of the more unique experiences. Food is decent too and a huge bonus - your wife will love this place.

Then go to Lost Abbey. Have a taster or two and pick up whatever bottles you want.

Check the tap list at Churchill's Pub and see if there is anything on that you want before heading back south.

Stop by Alesmith to pick up bottles and have a few tasters. They make great beer, but I find it hard to spend a lot of time in their tasting room.

Go to Societe. Cannot miss this one. They are making some of the best IPAs in the world right now. Everything they do is solid.

After a little while at Societe, head a few blocks away to Council. They are fairly new but they are another brewery knocking it out of the park right now.

Go to O'Brien's for dinner. Classic SD spot with pub food and great beer.

Finish the night at Toronado because of their taplist and, if you want to get spendy, their bottle list.
