You're going the wrong way if you hit Maple Plain.

A couple updates from the NW part of the state.

Rhombus Guys Pizza in Grand Forks, ND bought the historic Opera House in downtown GF and has been posting pictures of the remodelling to become a restaurant and brewery. They just posted pictures of the brewing system being built.

Junkyard Brewing in Moorhead, MN is buying a 3bbl brewing system to increase their capacity. They moved to a new location with a taproom earlier this year an have had very limited growler sales as they try to keep the taproom supplied with beer.

Junkyard is quietly out there brewing phenomenal beer. We stop in every time we are in the FM area.

Yeah I agree...still under the radar but they are doing some great stuff. Hoping to hit their new taproom one of these days if I ever get to Fargo again..

Too lazy to see if this is already mentioned, but Beaver Island brewery in St Cloud is close to opening. There's an article in the SC Times.

Was going through Brainerd area on Saturday and hit Gull Dam with the wife.....debated between Jackpine and Gull Dam but I wanted to get a couple growlers and Gull Dam fills any growler and Jackpine does not so I chose Gull Dam.

Kind of a cool place....big....they had some food going from a vendor inside.....kind of a warehouse like setting.....I tried all their beers and the regulars ranged from solid to good. I thought their seasonal Oatmeal Stout aged on Vanilla bean was the best of the bunch. I was happy to buy a couple growlers of that. All the beers were clean tasting with no off flavors. The brewer uses some kind of obscure hops in a lot of the beers...at least hops I am not real familiar with and I've had a beer or two in my day....I thought the wheat beer offered a lot of flavor for a basic american wheat (it had some of those hops).....I could see that drinking well in the summer....the rest like I said were solid and enjoyable but nothing I would call the greatest in the state.

They seem to have a good thing going here. I'm sure when a lot of the summer tourists arrive they will do well. Shit Leech Lake does well and this is much better.

My north-central MN ratings right now. 1) Bemidji Brewing 2)Gull Dam 3) Leech Lake. TBD) Jackpine (I've had their stuff at bars in Brainerd but have yet to give them a good thorough tasting. Maybe if they change their growler policy I will give them a try next time.
