I had to read this a few times to find the humor. I get it. Very funny stuff.

The only difference is that people will probably expect to drink more than 5 oz of the beer. And beers generally taste better warmer than cocktails ... And that added warmth is probably going to detract from how refreshing the beer is. But, yes, good point. I really do want to try this now!

I haven't had this beer, but I get where the OP is coming from. The Bruery may have completely nailed their goal, and still made a beer that tastes bad - that's subjective.

I have a feeling that all the people giving it high marks for it tasting just like a margarita did not give Bud Lite Lime-a-rita the same kind of glowing review.

(Sometimes, tasting exactly as intended is not a good thing. Sometimes, it's a great thing. Let your taste buds decide.)

Which two words? Dear Bruery, I don't or haha-yes? Ok, sorry...hard to resist.

Roguer said it better than I did, thanks.

your ABV% isn't going to be lower. it is just going to be diluted. 80% proof is till 80 proof not matter how you look at it.

I've never had this and I'm sure I never want to. This stuff sounds horrific. But to each his own as with everything.

IMHO, I had this with some buddies and it was definitely not my favorite, but I refused to rate it because I cant do that to The Bruery, I would have had to leave a not so kind rating, I decided it was to each there own and let it be. I will say this I split it with like 6 people and no one else liked it either, but upon review of the ratings there is a few out there that found it to be good. so with that being said cheers

I had a similar experience with Hibernal Dichotomus from Kester King. Just awful. But I also haven't been able to even sniff tequila since my first ever drinking experience at 18 when I decided that if 5 shots of Jose Quervo was fun, 5 more would double the fun. :flushed:

That's a strange reason not to rate a beer. Defeats the entire purpose of the exercise. Unless of course you are buddies personally with those guys and don't want to make them feel bad I guess. I would be happy to tell my friends that their home brew tastes like crap though.

I actually thought Black Ash was interesting but definitely need to enjoy smoke flavor there.

I'm genuinely curious to hear more about rating to style and brewery intent. By that logic, does Rogue's Voodoo Doughnut series get a pass? When a brewery sets out to do something innovative but misses with a big segment of their customer base, can it still be deemed successful and worthy of world-class status? When is a miss just a miss? Again, I am posing these questions out of curiosity and not to be inflammatory.

No, the Rogue abominations don't get a pass because (according to the reviews since I haven't had it) they taste artificial and do not really match up even with the weirdness that they profess to be. By most accounts here (and many reviews), this beer nails what it was going for.

I don't have as big a problem with ragging on an experimental beer (though I still think it's unfair) as I do with people who don't like hoppy bitterness rating IPAs lowly or people who don't like simplicity, balance, and subtlety rating a kölsch or Dortmunder lowly or people who don't like sour and cheesy funk flavors rating gueuzes lowly. It's ignorant, unfair to the beer and the brewer, and frankly makes one look pretty stupid. I don't care much for smoked beers, but I'd never rate Aecht Schlenkerla Märzen anything below a 4.25. I advocate for people rating to style in conjunction with personal preference and avoiding reviewing styles one is unfamiliar with or dislikes entirely. If one simply must rate a style one does not care for or does not know, the least one can do is provide a disclaimer/qualifier explaining the bias/lack of knowledge that led to the review score.

A miss is a miss when the brewer completely misses their intent, stylistic guidelines, and/or both. Personal preference should absolutely be factored in, but it should not be the sole foundation of a rating/review; I personally try to use a ratio of 60-40 style-enjoyment in my ratings.

This is a really helpful breakdown for rating beers. Thanks for taking my questions seriously!

    How about here?:

Don't get me wrong there are many beers I try that I don't really care for. But I give them an honest review in the beer's profile instead of creating an entire thread. You are certainly entitled to your own opinion but keep it to a review and the entire BA community will benefit.

Thanks for taking my imperfect and perhaps self-righteous attitude toward rating beers as helpful! I mean well, even if I sometimes may come off opinionated or rude.

I left this out, but it should be mentioned for visibility's sake: if you're curious about what an unfamiliar style should/could taste like, look to the page of the particular style on this website as well as the BJCP guidelines. Neither is totally comprehensive or perfect, but both combined should give you a fairly solid foundation on which to judge a beer.

    Cheers!

If you dilute a drink, or add ice that melts, then you increase the volume and thereby decrease the ABV. The V stands for volume.
