I never said I myself am getting a caffeine buzz from a coffee stout, I was just pointing out that if it is true that there is 30-40 mg in FBS then it is definitely possible for you to feel the effects of caffeine as it is above the threshold limit of caffeine effects, but definitely not more than a cup of coffee. Additionally, I have no idea what you are talking about when you say "there isn't that much of a coffee profile in FBS." FBS is straight chocolate and coffee, which ALSO means that a small amount of caffeine can come from the chocolate. The threshold for effects of caffeine is 10-20 mg orally. Thus, even if there was only 10mg of caffeine in FBS, anyone sensitive to caffeine can certainly feel the effects of just one.

The theobromine is the most significant drug found in chocolate. The amount found in one ounce of chocolate with >70% cocao content is medically significant for individuals with high blood pressure or heart disease. Theobromine is a heart stimulant, so it raises heart rate and causes anxiety without making you jittery or energized.

Most coffee stouts have about the same amount of caffeine as a cup of decaf or less, per 12 oz. serving.

I think the OP is confusing the caffeine with the alcohol buzz. I too experience an initial high from a stronger beer, but have little trouble sleeping after that.

Tweak and Bourbon County Coffee both make me a jumpy weirdo, but that also may be a high sugar content.

I know coffee BCS uses cold press. Not sure about Tweak, but both certainly have an effect outside of the booze.

    Tweak actually made me tweak.

That was my thought. It looks like coffee and it has coffee on the label, so the notion of it being full of caffeine gets in your head.

We analyzed the caffeine content in our Snow Pack Coffee Stout and it was 11mg per 12oz bottle. About the same caffeine content as a cup of decaf coffee. That used a fair amount of cold-brew coffee post fermentation.

I had a couple of Shorts Cup a Joes late last Friday evening and felt like it kept me up, not like drinking a mug of coffee awake, but more like drinking a caffeinated soda pop.

I drink no coffee or soda and am fairly sensitive to caffeine based on past experience. I've never experienced a caffeine tweak from a coffee stout. I've had coffee BCS and coffee bender. According to the reading I've done, those saying that a 12 oz coffee stout contains as much caffeine as a cup of decaf are correct.

Like some have mentioned, I would think that the depressant properties of the alcohol would overcome any buzz from traces of caffeine.

Agreed! You know what though, it might've been also that I had a cup of coffee before that stout. So I was just feeling the effects of both Caffeine and Alcohol. Yet, I can drink the hell out of Java Head from Troegs at night time and still goto sleep (I'm caffeine sensitive). Behold the power of Suggestion I guess.

I drink coffee all the time. So no effects here. I can only wish that i got stimulated from a glass of coffee stout, or a regular cup of coffee for that matter. :astonished:

I can say, with near certainty, that the caffeine in coffee stouts is not worth writing home about. Why? The one time I had a coffee beer instead of the coffee I have each morning, I'll still got that mid-afternoon headache that comes from not feeding the beast.

This^ I've had my share of Coffee stouts before bedtime, in which I still was able to sleep. I drank a few BSDA in one sitting that kept me up all night long.

I generally don't drink coffee after around 4:30-5:00 at night unless it's decaf. I never really thought about coffee in beer keeping me awake at night either until a few months ago when I drank one 12 oz of Santa Fe's Java Stout at around 7:00. I had a very restless sleep that night. It wasn't until much pondering the next day until I put two-and-to together. It may not have been the coffee in the stout at all; regardless I have refrained from drinking coffee-intensive beers on a work night.

My question: do you suppose there is enough coffee in these beers to affect one's sleep cycle? Or am I just thinking too much into things?

This Victory at Sea 12 oz is really calling to me right now..

yes! There definitely is. I also have a low tolerance for caffeine. I can't drink a strong coffee stout at night. It always keeps me up. (For that matter, dark chocolate also would keep me up.)

Everyone has a different rate of caffeine metabolism. Some people can drink coffee and go to bed, and at the opposite extreme is us. yay.

Well at least a low tolerance means a nice caffeine buzz off coffee in the morning
