"We also ask our supporters and fans to refrain from
Arguing on our page with those who may be upset by our label. We want to do our best to be culturally sensitive and respectful. Thank-you everyone."

"We apologize to any Indian people that find our Gandhi-Bot label offensive. Our intent is not to offend anyone but rather pay homage and celebrate a man who we respect greatly. We take great care in creating a product we hope will not be abused in the manner that Mahatma Gandhi spoke of when referencing alcohol. So many Indian people here in America love our tribute to him. Gandhi's granddaughter and grandson have seen the label and have expressed their admiration of the label. We hope that you understand our true intent and learn to respect our method and the freedom we have to show our reverence for Gandhi.
    -Sincerely, NEB"

Next thing you know NEB will be hacked, then the entire Internet in India will go down, then Gandi Bot will be available everywhere in the US.

I can see how someone would be insulted that an international champion of peace would be posthumously put on the label of a product that leads to thousands of deaths annually and is frequently associated with rude and disrespectful behavior.

But to call for legal sanctions? Eh, that seems like a bit much.

I would hope Mr. Goud understands that Indian law does not apply outside of India, and that his emotional reaction and subsequent butt-hurt won't get him anywhere in life but disappointed.

I need to find me some Gandhi-Bot.

I hate political correctness, and I am all for ultimate and unchecked freedom of speech. This is absurd. If I want to put a picture of Mohammed or Jesus or Moses or whoever on my beer, I should be able to, even if it's in an insensitive and vulgar light.

Gandhi-Bot isn't insensitive at all, and the fact that it's become controversial is just another byproduct of overly-sensitive people with too much time on their hands.

I am far from PC, but do remember that when I first saw the label, I thought it was in rather poor taste: making caricature for commercial purposes of someone who was, after all, assassinated for his beliefs. What's next, MLK-Bot? Would there be any difference?

But this is a free country, and the brewer can do what they want, poor taste or not. By the same token, anyone offended has an equal right to make their objections heard. I can respect both, without necessarily agreeing with either side. Free expression can be a noisy, messy business.

Absolutely NOBODY is genuinely offended. This is just a by product of the overly sensitive culture we have fostered. Ignore ridiculous objections such as these and they will go away. Give them credence and they will win.

Is a money shakedown at the end of this? As far as religious beer name outrage syndrome, BA lists 33 beers with Jesus in the name, including Zombie Jesus and has anyone complained (for the record the are zero beers listed on BA with funny Muhammad names)? Probably not, but like Howard Stern always says a couple of nuts with an official looking letterhead can cause much trouble.
Most every person from India I have ever met are too levelheaded and busy taking care of their families to worry about nonsense such as this.

you could argue that we were just talking about our regional brewery, while you're posting about a "national" (or at least more general) buzzfeed article. NEBCO facebook comments occasioned the thread i was posting in before, i believe.

The irony of naming a beer after someone who "identified the consumption of alcohol as a major social evil and urged a ban on drinking." I can see someone getting offended at that. Kinda like if someone made a Ted Nugent brand tofu.

I really hope they don't buckle and change the name. Also to the people who are offended by the name and the label, I will give you some great advice, Don't Be Offended.

I hope so. Mandela-Bot, too. Lincoln-Bot, JFK-Bot, John Brown-Bot, etc. all need to be a thing because fuck sensitive people. They are entitled to be sensitive and voice that opinion, but they have no recourse to have it changed and an actually influence the brewery's labeling/naming practices.
