I guess I've never looked at it this way. For example, I'm pretty sure that sometime over the next 10 months I'm going to want a Parabola or Saison-Brett or Stone IRS. So when one of these beers comes out, I buy as much as I think I'll want for the coming year (or sometimes longer if I'm aging a few). The only exception to this rule is IPAs, which I buy fresh and drink ASAP.

Some people might call me a hoarder; I think I'm just a drinker who plans ahead.

Do what I do: put some in the fridge at work. I've got a Collage and Uncle Jacob's in there waiting for "one of those days".

I find that I often run low on "everyday" beers, so even though I have tons of bottles in the fridge and closet, sometimes I have to run to the store when I want something that's not like a 14% imperial stout. My wife thinks it's a little ridiculous when I say "I'm out of beer," and yes, I see her point. But I'm not going to crack an Abyss every night.

Usually keep anywhere from 6 to 12 varieties in the food fridge. The beer fridge in the garage is a different story though. Then there's about 30-40 odd bottles that comprise the 'cellar'. Then there's the homebrew, which could be anywhere in the house depending on its state of fermentation and/or carbonation.

Without being home I can say with confidence that there are about 12-15 different brews in there currently. Usually it would be lower, but moving to a place where I no longer have a place to cellar/store my beers means more and more are getting drank every day.

And that's a good thing (mostly)

Thanks to the OP...this was a good exercise for me. I have 45 different types of beer in the beer fridge at the moment including two varieties of homebrew.

Time to stop buying for a little and start drinking.

I don't keep much around because I usually shop twice a week for what I'm interested in at the moment, but there are always strays lurking about. On average there are 6-8 different beers to choose from, some more than others.

I generally don't buy beer until I'm out of the last purchase.

Unless you cook to pair with the beer you have.
