Anyone else going to this? I just purchased tickets a few days ago after they released that Surly would have Three and 2009 Darkness. I read the post from last years and saw that it had pretty great reviews too. I've been to a few of the Chop Liver festivals, and they always seem like they are well thought out and run pretty well. I also asked how many tickets were available and they said around 800 to keep overcrowding down as well.

With Firkenfest Fest being Easter weekend this year, I decided this would be a good year to check this one out instead.

I'm going again. I thought last year was the best fest I went to all year. Every booth had awesome selections, and there were absolutely NO lines. I understand it's pricey, but for me it's easily justified.

That was a big selling point for me too. I love Winterfest/Firkenfest, but when you're limited to three hours, I want to be able to get through a line in no or little time to enjoy as many beers I haven't had before.

Yeah, there weren't lines for anything (Darkness '10 & '11, SYX, BA Silhouette, Rum King, several Town Hall selections and so on). They also provided plenty of water and good solid food (not just snacks). I haven't been to a beer event this laid back in a long time, if ever. So if $100 doesn't set you back, I'd for sure do it.

This was an awesome event last year-my wife even enjoyed it. No lines, great beers and food included in the ticket. We've got our tickets to go again this year. I think we'll see even better beers this year after the success of last year... Can't wait.

Dumb luck I had booked a hotel downtown Minneapolis for a birthday trip of eating steaks with the girlfriend, didn't even know this was going on until I saw this thread. Just bought my tickets, hopefully it lives up to past years reviews

Did they announce the beers from the final three breweries yet? Don't really feel like hunting down and listening to the 'Beercast'.

BEER LIST #26 - Evil Twin Brewing

Beer #1 - Sour Bikini - Named after atom bomb test grounds, designed by a French car engineer - the bikini was to many a disturbing and degrading creation and fortunately for others a symbol of emancipation. This is attractively light bodied, seductively well balanced and very drinkable Sour Bikini is anything but a sissy beer.

Beer #2 - Ryan the Beaster Bunny - In Denmark we have a lovely tradition for seasonal beer, and what you have here is certainly no exception. This is a never before seen collaboration between Ryan and the Beaster Bunny. A fluffy and precious Saison originally conceived of on the beautiful island of Fanø on the west coast of Denmark. It may sound like a true fairy tale, but don’t be fooled by it’s cute appearance

BEER LIST #25 - Sociable Cider Werks

Beer #1 - Ringo - This special Apple Graff is made of rice, Lake Superior Honey, and Minnesota apples fermented on Sake yeast, then aged in bourbon barrels. We then added oak that had been soaking in elderflower liqueur to create a truly unique Graff.

Beer #2 - Saison Apple - An open fermented, barrel-aged Apple Graff made with German Pilsner malt, Minnesota apples, and Belgian yeast.

Beer #3 - Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout - A monster Imperial Stout aged in High West Barrels.

BEER LIST #24 - Lift Bridge Beer Company

Beer #1 - Commander Un-Barreled - Named after the Commander grain elevator in downtown Stillwater, our English-Style Barleywine is aged in bourbon barrels and features heavy amounts of malts and subtle, sweet Cardamom. Typically only found in the Bourbon Barrel Aged form, this rare "un-barreled" Commander will let you taste the heart of the barley wine.

Beer #2 - 2014 Silhouette Barrel Aged Imperial Stout - Black as a moonless night and brewed in the style of a Russian Imperial Stout, this complex beer’s notes of coffee, roasted malt, rich toffee and black licorice meld with an intense roasted character to provide a complex, rich and full bodied beer. Brimming with notes of oak, vanilla, and bourbon achieved by ageing up to 2 years in premium spirit barrels.

BEER LIST #23 - Deschutes Brewery

Beer #2 - 2012 Abyss - See how this beer tastes after aging 2 1/2 years

Beer #3 - 2010 Abyss - See how it tastes after almost 5 years of aging! A very special treat to say the least

Beer #4 - 2014 Mirror Mirror - The Reserve Series romance all began with our first release of this limited-edition brew. Mirror Mirror, born of a double batch of Mirror Pond Pale Ale, is an inspired barley wine ale layered with intriguing nuances. Explore this latest incarnation and enjoy its delicious complexity in every sip.

Beer #5 - 2009 Mirror Mirror - Only made every 5 years, see what those 5+ years of aging do to this amazing barleywine!

Beer #6 - 2015 Jubel - Affectionately referred to as “Super Jubel”, Jubel 2015 is an imperial take on our festive winter ale. Notes of toasted caramel, raisins, dates and figs are complemented by spicy and herbal hop aromas. Originally planned as a once-a-decade-ale; we just couldn’t wait another five years.

Beer #7 - 2010 Jubel - This was a very special day in MN when this came out, and with limited availability then, you know there is very little that exists anyway, so this is truly a extra special selection!

Also, make sure to say hi to Assistant Brewer, Ryan Schmiege, who is coming all the way out from Bend just to spend this amazing night with all of you lucky attendees!!!

BEER LIST #22 - Stone Brewing Company

Beer #1 - Arbalest - Bourbon Barrel Aged Belgian Pale Ale

Beer #2 - Reason Be Damned - Belgian Style Abbey Ale aged in Red Wine Barrels

Beer # 3 - Vintage IRS - So thick, rich and well, sinful, you might worry that you'll be doomed to the fiery pits just for thinking about a sip. Rest assured, however, that even though this seemingly pernicious brew is indeed as black as sin, we guarantee that no actual sin was committed in making it... you'll have to add that on your own. This massive and intensely aromatic beer abounds with notes of anise, black currants, coffee, and roastiness, and its heavy palate is nothing to be trifled with!

BEER LIST #21 - Boulevard Brewing Company

Beer 1 - Spiced Saison Collaboration with Ommegang (Brewed at Ommegang) - This is the only keg that was brewed in NY that has come to MN!!! Boulevard’s brewmaster Steven Pauwels and Ommegang’s brewmaster Phil Leinhart chose to collaborate on a Saison, a traditional Belgian farmhouse ale. We first brewed two separate batches of beer using our respective house yeasts, and then blended them post-fermentation, allowing both of our yeasts distinctive characteristics to come through.

Beer 2 - 2014 Saison Brett - Assertively dry hopped, then bottle conditioned with various yeasts, including Brettanomyces, a wild strain that imparts a distinctive earthy quality. Though this farmhouse ale was given three months of bottle age prior to release, further cellaring will continue to enhance the “Brett” character, if that's what you're after.

Beer 3 - The Calling - An undeniable IPA we were driven to make. It's our tribute to like-minded dreamers, adventurous spirits, and glass half-full optimists. It's also our most heavily hopped beer ever, bursting forth with unmistakable tropical fruit and pine hop aromas and flavor supported with a slightly sweet malt character, tapering to a crisp, dry finish. Heed your call and enjoy.

BEER LIST #20 - Lakefront Brewery

Beer #1 - Saison de la Canneberge (Cranberry Saison) - A farmhouse ale brewed with all Wisconsin malt, wheat and hops. Dried Wisconsin cranberries

were added to a secondary fermentation to give a subtle tartness.

Beer #2 - Rendezvous Brandy Barrel Aged Biere De Garde - A Biere de Garde—literally, “a beer to keep”—is a style conceived in the hills of Northern France. This traditional farmhouse ale is brewed with a special French ale yeast, giving it a subtle, yet delightful ester fruitiness. Ample amounts of 2-row malt give Rendezvous a luscious, full body. Generous amounts of Munich malts are added for additional sweetness and give Rendezvous an impassioned red hue. Saaz hops are added for a mild bitterness and a clean finish. Robust, smooth, and surprisingly refreshing, the effect on your palate is an intense, fleeting episode: a rendezvous. Aged in brandy barrels for 10 months.

Beer #3 - Organic Beerline Barleywine aged in Organic Rye Whiskey barrels - The Organic Barrel Aged Beer Line Barley Wine marks our most ambitious beer release in 27 years. We held it for 18 months in Catoctin Creek Distilling Company organic rye whiskey barrels, making it the first organic barrel-aged barley wine in the United States. The extended barrel aging imparted an unrivaled taste and complex aroma. Rich vanilla and caramel aromas captivates the nose, while oak, full malt, and toffee flavors captivate the taste buds. The finish is elegant, rich, and warming.

Beer #4 - 2014 Black Friday - Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout - Brewed once a year and sold exclusively at the brewery on the Friday following Thanksgiving. An Imperial Stout aged in Bourbon barrels.

BEER LIST #19 - Left Hand Brewing Company

Beer #1 - Fade to Black Vol. 1 (2010 & 2013 GABF Gold Medal) - Drifting further into the darkness with each passing day. Volume 1 – Foreign Stout – Pours black with licorice, espresso bean, molasses, and black cardamom notes that give way to a feeling of self loathing, burnt opportunities and smoked relationships.

Beer #2 - Rum Barrel Aged Black Jack Porter (2014 GABF Silver Medal) - Black Jack Porter delves deeply beneath the surface to embrace your Ace. Espresso and dark chocolate flavors envelop your senses, with herbaceous hop flavors pulling you from the light. You never know what treasures may be lurking in the darkness. AGED IN RUM BARRELS!!!

Beer # 3 - Smokejumper Imperial Smoked Porter (2014 GABF Silver Medal) - Smokejumpers are those fearless wildland firefighters who specialize in parachuting into the wilderness so that we can continue to enjoy it. Smokejumper Imperial Porter is a tribute to them – a twenty-one degree plato porter made with barley malt hand- smoked by our brewers. Roasty brown in color, the long lingering smokiness wraps around flavors of molasses, toasted malt and an earthy hoppiness.

BEER LIST #18 - Ballast Point Brewing & Spirits

Beer #1 - Sour Wench - Sour Wench was a Home Brew Mart recipe that we made every year for the Southern California Home brewers Fest in Temecula. This Blackberry Ale was originally developed by Ballast Point’s original Master Brewer Peter A’Hearn and Colby Chandler. While interning in Germany, Peter fell in love with the Berliner Weiss style of beer. A beer made with a procedure in which the mash was soured. The tartness of the Oregon State Marion Blackberries, at one pound per gallon, was a perfect addition for this sour style. Sour Wench is not aged in oak barrels. In the end, it’s a great bridge beer into the sour styles
Beer #2 - Grapefruit Sculpin - Some may say there are few ways to improve Sculpin’s unique flavor, but the tart freshness of grapefruit perfectly complements our IPA’s citrusy hop character. Grapefruit’s a winter fruit, but this easy-drinking ale tastes like summer.
Beer #3 - Longfin Lager (Palette Cleanser) - Our Longfin Lager has become one of the go-to beers with the team at the brewery. A solidly balanced Helles that finishes clean with a hint of hops, it would easily fit in at any German beer garden. But we think it’s perfect for enjoying on the beach, the boat or anywhere else you can put an ice chest full of beer.

BEER LIST #17 - Sierra Nevada Brewing Company

Beer #1 - Barrel Aged Bigfoot Barleywine - Bigfoot is a cult-classic beer brewed in the barleywine style, meaning a strong, robust, bruiser of a beer with the refined intensity of a wine. Bigfoot is prized by beer collectors for its supreme cellarability. Under the proper conditions, it can age like a fine wine, developing new flavors and character as it matures in the bottle.

Beer #2 - Scotch Ale (From the Vault) - Sierra Nevada’s traditionally styled Scotch Ale is deep red in color, possessing a strong malt flavor with a very light hop character. Though medium bodied, this sweet ale is accentuated with a warming alcohol note and a generous portion of European malts

Beer #3 - Pale Ale (Palette Cleanser) - Its unique piney and grapefruit aromas from the use of whole-cone American hops have fascinated beer drinkers for decades and made this beer a classic, yet it remains new, complex and surprising to thousands of beer drinkers every day. It is—as it always has been—all natural, bottle conditioned and refreshingly bold.

BEER LIST #16 - Fulton Beer
Beer #1 - Rue Bourbon - A dark farmhouse ale aged in Knob Creek barrels

Beer #2 - Red Wine Barrel Aged Expat - A Rye Saision aged in Parley Lake Winery Red Wine barrels.

BEER LIST #15 - Goose Island Brewery

Beer 1 - 2008 Boubon County Stout - Brewed in honor of the 1000th batch at the original Claybourn brewpub. A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with thick foam the color of a bourbon barrel. The nose is an intense mix of charred oak, chocolate, vanilla, caramel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer.

Beer 2 - Bourbon County Stout - Vanilla Rye - First brewed for the legendary Festival of Wood and Barrel Aged Beer in Chicago, drinkers enjoyed this Bourbon County Variant so much we bottled it. This years version features a little twist of aging the stout in Rye Whiskey Barrels with a mix of Mexican and Madagascar vanilla beans!

Beer 3 - Bourbon County Stout - Coffee - Everyday Goose Island smells the wonderful coffee roasting next to the brewery at Chicago's Intelligentsia Coffee and Tea. This world class roaster puts the same passion and skill into their coffee as Goose Island does with its beer. This excellent stout is made with a different coffee from our friends next door each year

BEER LIST #14 - Bent Paddle Brewing Co.

Beer 1 - Barrel Aged Double Black - Conditioned for six months in oak bourbon barrels, our Limited-Edition Barrel Aged Double Black is a full-bodied ale that deftly walks the line between deep, chocolate-coffee tones and notes of vanilla and dark stone fruits – and is punctuated with a bourbon whiskey finish. It’s the perfect cold-weather companion on a brisk Northwoods night.

Beer 2 - Double Shot Double Black - Instead of conditioning this beer in a whiskey barrel, they decided to jazz it up a different kind of way. Adding a double shot of espresso to an already delicious beer will have beer geeks bouncing off the walls for this beer! LITERALLY!!!

Beer 3 - Barrel Aged Red Smoked Rye - In honor of Valentines Day we chose to feature Bent Paddle because they made this collaboration beer for this event with their Duluth Brewing Lovers Fitger's Brewhouse Brewery and Grille!!!

BEER LIST #13 - Central Waters Brewing Company

Beer 1 - 2011 Y2K Cosmic Barleywine - Brewed for the apocalypse that never was, and conditioned for 1 full year in the brewery's tanks prior to release, this 11% ABV barleywine has a resinous hop character balanced atop a sturdy malt foundation that conjures up flavors of toffee, rum, figs, and sweet biscuits. 4 YEARS OLD!!!

Beer 2 - 17 - Their Anniversary Stout is almost impossible to get in a keg as they bottle most of it for sale! Just like last year with 16, they saved one keg for us on March 28th!!! This is a beer you will not want to miss out on!!!

Beer #3 - Insurrection Imperial IPA - Hopped with copious amounts of Nelson Sauvin and Mosaic hops!

BEER LIST #12 - New Holland Brewing Company

Beer 1 - Dragon’s Milk Reserve with Coffee & Chocolate - You probably know Dragon's Milk (bourbon barrel stout) already but what we have here is one of their special Reserve series. “This reserve batch of Dragon’s Milk is ridiculously decadent,” says Brett VanderKamp, president of New Holland.

Beer 2 - 2013 El Mole Ocho - A 2013 vintage of New Holland's exploration into the flavors of mole, the legendary sauce of central Mexico. Malty aroma and rich, cocoa-laden body laced with an invigorating tinge of dries chilies and coffee.

BEER LIST #11 - New Belgium Brewing

Beer 1 - 2013 La Folie - La Folie, French for ‘the folly’, is a beer steeped in New Belgium brewing tradition. This wood-aged, sour brown spends one to three years in big, oak barrels, known as foeders. And when the beer finally hits the glass, La Folie is sharp and sour, full of green apple, cherry, and plum-skin notes. Pouring a deep mahogany, the mouthfeel will get you puckering while the smooth finish will get you smiling. Not a beer for the timid, La Folie is a sour delight that will turn your tongue on its head Aged 2 years

Beer 2 - 2014 La Folie - One year newer, so that attendees can can compare the two beers and see how the beer changes with an extra year of cellaring.

    Beer 3 - TBA

BEER LIST #10 - The Brooklyn Brewery

Beer 1 - 2011 Black Chocolate Stout - This is the famous Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, our award-winning rendition of the Imperial Stout style, once made exclusively for Catherine the Great. We use three mashes to brew each batch of this beer, achieving a luscious deep dark chocolate flavor through a blend of specially roasted malts. We brew it every year for the winter season. It is delicious when newly bottled, but also ages beautifully for years. 4 years old.

Beer 2 - 2012 Black Chocolate Stout - Same beer but only 3 years old. Compare the two vintages and see how the beer changes with time.

BEER LIST #9 - August Schell Brewing Company

Beer 1 - Starkeller Peach (Faas) - Starkbier Berliner Weisse aged on Peaches. This strong Berliner Weisse was brewed with an extensive decoction mash schedule and fermented with an authentic mixed culture then aged it for nearly a year in our original 1936 cypress wood lagering tanks before 5,500 pounds of peaches were added for a four month, tertiary fermentation.

Beer 2 - Barrel Aged 2013 Snowstorm with Brett. (Faas) - Belgian Strong Golden Ale - Our interpretation of a Belgian Strong Golden Ale spiced with coriander and chamomile and then aged for over a year in a red wine barrel with Brettanomyces Claussenii.

BEER LIST #8 - Bemidji Brewing Company

Beer 1 - Raspberry Sour Red Ale - Flanders Red Ale that has been aged in a red wine barrel for 8 months and aged it an additional 4 months on tart red raspberries - over a pound per gallon. Luscious raspberry and fruit aromas and a snappy acidity are the delicious result.

Beer 2 - 100% Brett Farmhouse Ale - Belgian Farmhouse Ale fermented with 100% Brettanomyces Bruxellensis. Musty ripe fruit, pineapple, and leather notes sit atop a dry, crisp pilsner base.

Beer 3 - 2014 Double Porter - Double Porter is all about the malt - big cocoa, toast, and dark fruit characters are balanced against just enough bitterness to create a big, complex, warming experience.

BEER LIST #7 - Minneapolis Town Hall Brewery

Beer 1 - Sassafrass Trips - Belgian style Tripel brewed using classic yeast that tends to offer plum fruitiness with accents on spicy notes. Minnesota wildflower honey was used as an adjunct in this beer and it left a delicate earthy floral character in the finish. To highlight the earthy spicy character of this beer we aged this beer on Sassafras.

Beer 2 - Le Baltique - This Barrel Aged Baltic style porter is a rich lager. It has very complex, multi-layered flavors including dark cacao, coffee, raisin or black currant, with hints of licorice/anise, and molasses. It was then entombed in a French Oak red wine barrel from CA. Many many moons later we have this splendid sipper

Beer 3 - Nitro Tennessee Dessert - Imperial Stout aged to perfection in whiskey barrels. Removed and aged on dark chocolate.....then nitrogenated to extra silky smooth goodness!

BEER LIST #6 - Grand Teton Brewing Company

Beer 1 - American Sour - Strong Wheat ale soured with Lactobacillus and aged with Brettanomyces in oak barrels.

Beer 2 - Barrel Aged Belgian Golden Ale - Aged in a blend of neutral French Oak, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay barrels for 6 months.

Beer 3 - GT Vintage 2014 - A blend of fresh Belgian Quad and 2013 XX Bitch Creek Double ESB matured in Colombian rum barrels with ginger, cloves, cinnamon, allspice, vanilla beans, and orange peel.

BEER LIST #5 - The Herkimer Pub & Brewery

Beer 1 - Barrel Aged Black Perle - A true melding of flavors! We’ve taken our Black Perle while it was still young and fermenting and aged it in rye whiskey honey barrels locally sourced from Lakeville’s Turkey Hill Apiary. The remaining 2-3 pounds of honey has added a slight kick in both ABV and sweetness to this black ale that you do not get with the barrel alone. Look for a nice rye, vanilla, honey, and roasted character on both the nose and the palate that finishes smooth, with a bit of chocolate.

Beer 2 - Barrel Aged Blond - We’ve taken one of our favorite styles and gave it a twist. Our Belgian Blond offers hints of tangerine, wildflower honey, and floral notes with a smooth pilsner malt sweetness that finish dry with light clove and spicy hop flavors. This particular offering has made the extra step of being aged on Nelson Sauvin hops in Sauvignon Blanc barrels from the Ferrari-Carano winery in California. Look for the added flavors of gooseberry, honeydew melon, and guava.

Beer 3 - SamuraIPA - Brewed in collaboration with our sister brewery, moto-i, this single hop Imperial IPA is a send up to the brewing influences of Japan. Using only ingredients that would be available in the land of it’s namesake, this brew has no barley. Instead, we’ve opted for a beer mashed with various forms of malted buckwheat and a crucial sake ingredient known as koji then hopped throughout with Sorachi Ace. Look for a brew that is one part clean and fresh tasting, one part nutty, two parts Imperial IPA, and every part something you’ve never tried before.

Beer 4 - SamuraIPA(cask) with Buddha Hand - We took our Japanese inspired Imperial IPA and paired it with Buddha’s Hand. Buddha’s Hand is one of the oldest citrus fruits that is described as a “lemon with fingers,” this strange citrus is treasured for its sweet floral, lemon-lime and slight lavender fragrance and mild, sweet zest. Mingled with the lemon, dill and nuttiness of the SamuraIPA, this unique offering is sure to please.

???? 5 - Special treat. Stop by the booth to find out!

Beer 2 - 2012 Brown Shugga - Originally, a failed attempt at the 1997 batch of Olde GnarlyWine Ale resulting in an all-new-beer-style we like to call…Irresponsible! Plus its 3 years old!!!

I'm getting super pumped for this. So many good beers are being brought out for this. Looks like they really outdid themselves compared to last years list. Mark runs good festivals too. Everything is always well organized, so I'm sure this will not disappoint.
