It's open, but they aren't brewing their own beer. Yet. We think. They never responded to me when I queried them.

Well, Austin, Texas is a little bit outside the scope of our particular field of inquiry, Shazzarino!

Check out these two links for plans in your area. There are hundreds (over 1,700, in fact) of plans happening all at once, including brewpubs and restaurants:

Right you are, Seamus! Since they yanked their web presence this is the only way that I've been able to follow their progress.

Every home brewer and his or her friend has the idea (eventually) that they could do this for a living, but so few take this idea to the next level and formulate a business plan. Even still, funding is the greatest challenge for the many other plans out there right now, and I suspect it's the reason that a few plans (Last City, Rocky Coast) never saw fruition.

Oops! Guess my link in post #163 was a little redundant. Simply missed that Chaz had included at link to the same article in his earlier post. Forgive me, I work a corporate job in the Department of Redundancy Department - Repetitive division of Repetition.

Is that a Department at the University of Minnesota? :stuck_out_tongue:

P.S. No worries. I'm fumblethumbs when it comes to composing a simple Excel document, so long-form and a little redundancy is all good in the 'hood.

It appears that the Burnsville brewpub that was being planned by the owners of India Palace is actually happening. There's a new building going up attached to India Palace.

It looks like Burnsville has some work to do before they'll be able to sell growlers though.

The India Palace plan is in the East Metro -- right? :sunglasses:

But seriously, with all of the people out there, Woodbury and Oakdale could easily support a taproom - or two.

That first link -to Brewers Association- lists paid member of the Brewers Association and virtually every potential member, and it is a big list for a reason, as it includes the U.S., Canada, and other countries, too.

Alongside the names of brewpubs, you'll also find the names of brewpubs-in-planning, breweries-in-planning, 'Craft Beer Company client breweries*', alongside microbreweries (smaller volume of output and smaller area of distribution), regional breweries (larger volume of output, and distribution to multiple states), and certain large breweries (high-volume output and national or international distribution.)

It's worth mentioning that there is no one website that offers a list of brewpubs-only, but Beermapping does a good job of differentiating between breweries, brewpubs, beer bars, and even retail locations. It takes a little while to figure out how to use the site, but it offers a good visual representation:

    http://beermapping.com/brewery-maps/us-brewery-map/

*These are corporate entities that hold a brewers license but which may not also have a brewery, but instead hae their licensed brands brewed and co-packaged at facilities like The Lion in Pennsylvania, or Cold Spring in Minnesota.

Check out the article at this link for a good explanation:

I contacted them a few weeks ago and they finally got back to me. Here is what they said:

"We have submitted our materials to the ATF and they were backlogged 120 days. We are in the mix somewhere. We are hoping to have our own brews this spring. We do have over 100 beers and ciders now, 24 which are on tap.

We will be having a Grand Opening once we are brewing."

The article implies that India Palace's Burnsville location is turning into a brewpub. For some reason I had thought that the owners of India Palace were starting a new concept as a brewpub in Burnsville. Adit Kalra, one of the owners of 612Brew, is a member of the family that owns Tandoor Indian Restaurant in Bloomington. Early press coverage of 612Brew mentioned that it eventually would serve Indian food. I haven't heard any talk of that in a long time, but theoretically we may soon have two metro area breweries serving Indian food. Brewpubs that don't have to serve run-of-the-mill, crowd-pleasing American fare is a sign to me of the maturation of the brewing industry and the growth of the craft beer customer base.

On the other hand, existing bars and restaurants like The Raw Deal Restaurant / Real Deal Brewing (open now in Menomonee, WI), Schwietz, Grand Rounds, Opinion, and India Palace that are adding brewery components remind me of the 1990s brewpub bubble, in which we saw establishments like Green Mill and O'Gara's jump into the brewing sector to less than stellar results. The Freehouse, which comes from a restaurant group and is a restaurant first, bar second, and brewery third, also embodies the revival of this trend even though it has been a brewpub since its founding. As a consumer, I'd love to see more developments along these lines (Real Deal, for instance, is aptly named; the beer is legitimately good). I'm hopeful that the craft beer market now is large enough to support a local bar or restaurant brewing its own, not necessarily particularly good, beer on a small system in a way it wasn't last time around.

Granted that I pay an inordinate amount of attention to the various brewing plans (as well as the ins and outs of the restaurant scene), but I will say that you are probably much more hopeful than me.

It was only a few years ago that confused local food writers would refer to beer-oriented bars like Buster's on 28th as "brew pubs." Now we have bar owners attempting to bask in the reflected glory of "tap rooms." This does sound like a potential oasis for craft beer fans in the East Metro, but that name is going to cause a ton of confusion.
