This guy responded to an IP trade I posted a few weeks ago, then backed out morning of.

Good lookin out for the community on this one...why do people get involved in this thing just to rip people off. Takes a special kind of loser to poach beer off people.

Wasn't schmoopsbeer the guy behind that bizarre fiasco where he dangled a dave for trade and made a couple of potential traders jump through hoops like answering trivia questions and nonesuch until they bailed in disgust?

I completed a trade with CEnterPound a few weeks ago. He shipped first and everything went smoothly. Clearly nothing there that contradicts the OPs assumption, but am throwing it out there as a data point.

What a knucklehead. Uses the same personal info on his accounts -- idiot

Unfortunately, it doesn't take brains to rip people off with bad trades.

I also think that he's pilot1331 on RB, I got a lot of the same run around from pilot1331 as I have from schmoopsbeer, all with in the same type of message tone and mannerism. Schmoopsbeer later told me that that they were roommates, nonetheless if found this a little fishy.

Good point on the other site. CEnterPound did register an account there also. I don't spend any time over there, but it may be worth putting a warning out.

It is shit like this that makes me wish the bad trader list could show names and addresses!

At the very least-- anyone that submits a bad trader should keep the name and address handy somewhere!
If I find myself setting up a trade with a SD trader that has little time on the site and only a handful of trades I want to be message the people that have added bad traders in that ara to make sure it isn't some scammer under a new username!
(of course at least my case I'm not embarrassed to ask pretty much anyone to ship first, but my point stands)

I started a thread before the forums changed about "identity theft in the trading world."

    My basic point was this--
A scammer could easily create the username "AleWatcher" on RB or reddit (or some other site) and pretend to be me.
They could post ISOs and say, "I have lots of trades on BA..."

It's rather a scary thought, right?!

    My 2 solutions were;
1). Sign up for all the other sites under the same user name (or give user name if different)
2). Mention in your profile, "I do not trade on RB or reddit. If you're contacted on another site with this user name please message me here for verification."

It sucks that we even have to think this way, but I think recognizing ways for people to run scams is the first step towards preventing them.

Does anyone other than the "I'm 22 and just got into good beer and trading King Henry for whalez looks awesome!" crowd actually trade on Reddit? It seems like that site is chock full of the precise "here today, gone tomorrow" demographic that is causing the rash of recent bad traders.

i'm surprised more people haven't considered this. as the target of numerous fake accounts: gravitation, elivation, levitacion, levitra, and loveitation (the first 4 of which were t0rin0), it hit me that all it takes is signing up as "levitation" on another site to get access to my esteemed reputation.

case in point: someone stole "levitation" on ratebeer, and people have posted as "me" on various beer blogs.

the only other place where i actually post is facebook.

So I shouldn't go through with my trade with reddit's levitation for Veritas 010 then?

I've traded on reddit a few times, it's about as hit-or-miss as here to be perfectly honest. Much less traffic for the trading group, which isn't much of a surprise.

As far as stealing an identity on another site, I think it's always up to the individual trading to verify to their level of comfort the "legitness" of anyone else. How hard is it to send a BM to make sure that the person is whom they're claiming to be?

I see some legit traders on reddit, but not many. It seems like plenty of trades go down there, though. It's kind of weird to me, because the infrastructure is SO MUCH WORSE for trading, with no profiles, wants/gots, etc. It all has to be improvised and is very strange.

Yeah - Reddit is great at breadth, and terrible at depth. If you really want to get into a subject, such as beer, you're much better off finding someplace else. If you only casually care about a subject, then use Reddit for it. Thus if you're going to trade beer, that gets you pretty deep into a subject, and would be well worthwhile seeking out a true beer community.
