This post is part story, part excitement, part question.
So my buddy is a hunter s thompson fanboy. When they released this beer upon his death there was a silver scroll in one of the bottles (yes, just like willy wonka) which was a ticket to his funeral/party-thing. My buddy bought 30 cases (he works at a bar and was pouring them in to glasses hoping he could find one, he didnt). But he still has a few cases left. He said he is saving one for his funeral.

Has anyone had one of these aged the ten years or whatever since it was released? As a beer drinker, how is this beer? I assume it peaked some time ago. Anyone have any good notes on it?

This is 10 years too late for your buddy, but if he bought 30 cases of regular Gonzo bottles, he had a 0% chance of finding the ticket. The ticket was in one of the 1,500 special edition bottles that cost $95 each (I believe they were corked 750ml bottles).

As far as aging Gonzo, it will probably depend on how it was stored. I had a 2011 barrel aged gonzo about a month ago that was fantastic. My buddy shared an older (estimated 2007-9) barrel aged gonzo that was in a green 750ml bottle and had gone bad. If your buddy has a few spare cases, then you might as well crack one open and see how it is.

He bought cases of whatever contained the scroll. I dont know all the specifics.

I was telling him I want to be invited to the next tasting party.

So your friend spend nearly 35,000$ on beer to find this scroll?

after rereading dammitmikes post, i didnt realize he had said each BOTTLE was 95 dollars. So maybe he bought the wrong beer all together (in which case, i can NOT WAIT to break his balls on that one) He had told me he spent 900. So maybe he bought 10 for huimself? and then more for the bar? I honestly am not sure. The moral of the story was that he has some ten year old gonzo.

update. Texted him and asked if he bought the 22s or 12s. He bought 30 cases of 12s. Told him about the scrollls only being in the 22s. He said "holy shit." and "that was before the internet was a big thing, plus i was on drugs" Lol. Love this f'n guy....

Haha damn, that is pretty funny though. Definitely post an update when you get a chance to try one. I'm curious to hear if any of them are still good. If your buddy has any interest, I had heard that there was one of the big bottles from the scroll release still sitting at a beer store in MD. The scroll was already found and the funeral has passed, but I believe each bottle was signed by Hunter S. Thompson. If you're buddy is a big fan, it might be a cool piece of memorabilia. If your buddy is interested, I can pass along the name of the store or look into it and see if it's still around and how much they're asking.
