Thanks for the advice. The vine isn't cheap either. I'll look for those in my local bottle shop. I'll probably be putting up an ISO temptation soon as well.

I opened a bottle of LeBleu with a buddy who knows absolutely nothing about beer (he drinks whiskey and red dog). He described it as tasting like liquid sour patch kids.

You could always start with the supersweet lambics (lindemans) like my wife did or perhaps since you're into darker beers a Flanders Oud Bruin or Flanders Red? There are some great examples of these readily (but $$) available in most of the country.

Somehow I don't think that I'll be getting anything from the bruery in the near future. It seems like that bruery brews trade pretty high around here.

Girardin Gueuze 1882 was one of the first sours I tried and "Warheads" is how I described it.

On a side note, I just moved into an area of the country that gets Jolly Pumpkin beers. Anyone have recommendations for which beers to try by them, sour and otherwise?

Just as a side note to your original post, having nothing to do with sours...DO NOT let Sofie turn you off to saisons!! I almost made the same mistake but its really become a wide open style and as a huge fan of saisons I have never been able to find what so many people like about Sofie. Obviously to each their own, but taste a Hennepin and then go the complete opposite route and try to get your hands on a Saison-Brett. Dupont, Fantome, BK Sorachi Ace, Jack D'or...there are some kick ass saisons and none of them are named Sofie

Actually, MF is one of the easier Bruery beers I've traded for (I'm pretty sure it's still at Provisions). Referencing stupac's post above, it seems like a majority of people don't exactly love it.

Let me know if you end up wanting to try it and I'll take care of you.

If they have it, get the Biere de Mars.

For a light, "tart" beer, get the Bam Biere.

La Roja is more of a consecration/darker sour/flanders.

However, most of the regular JP lineup is not crazy sour. Their Grand Reserves are fantastic though.

Thanks for the suggestions. I won't lie, I tried that and thought screw saisons. This is gross. I'll keep my eyes open for those listed and give them a try.

BM sent. I probably won't be sending anything out for a little while. I have a couple trades going on at the moment and don't want to over commit and not come through for you. I've had a couple beers with lower relative ratings (mid 80s) that I really like ( Kuhnhenn braggot for instance). I'll give it a try depending on cost / etc..

I would say that dark sours don't make the best "first impression" sours.

And how can someone hate Sofie?

And that's how a lot of people feel about Sofie, hence the high ratings. Try Fantome Saison if you don't believe in Saisons.

Heh, I literally laughed out loud when I read his post. Personally I just don't like the taste of red wine so it's a no brainer that I would probably dislike beers aged in red wine barrels. I just didn't do my due diligence before purchasing these. No big deal. Thanks for the suggestion. I'm always looking to try new brews.

    Cheers!

(reading the reviews for that, it sounds pretty tasty. But I don't think I'll have the pleasure anytime soon since it's from Belgium and highly rated...)

Many people feel that way the first time they try a sour beer, especially those not well versed in different styles to begin with. These are the same type that find KBS and FBS boozy.

Consecration is a great introduction to sours. It is nowhere near as tart as many Bruery beers and the RR regular releases are going to hook most people on the style over many of the other common "sours" like Cuvee Rene, Oude Kriek, etc...
