I was surprised to learn a certain beer store in an affluent SW Vermont town ships beer. They get some nice stuff from local breweries; none of the big 3, but some Fiddlehead, Back Acre, and other quality Vermont and New England Brews. Come to find out this store ships beer at a premium to folks to willing to pay the shipping plus $$$ (cases of Second Fiddle, etc). I'm not a local to the area, but I would be irritated if my local bevy shipped out stuff before I could get it simply because someone far away was willing to pay extra and shipping $. Is this a common thing in the state? I haven't heard of this before...

They advertise on their instagram. Must of found a loophole in the legality, or they are complete idiots.

"Manufacturers of Malt Beverages can now ship directly to consumers with the Direct to Consumer for Malt Beverages License."

This is fairly new, but it only applies to Breweries and Wineries. I've yet to hear of a Brewery taking advantage of this in the state.

Very true. Should be pretty easy to figure this one out. It's what folks would call a "Gold Town" or a place with a crap ton of second homes and retired folks.

Correct. Direct shipping means shipping directly from the place manufactured to the consumer. A product going from it's origin to a distributor, then a retailer, and then a consumer is not direct shipping.

The law was changed last July, and it is now legal for store to ship beer or wine to out of state consumers.

"....a second-class license for the premises where such dealer shall carry on the business which shall authorize such dealer to export malt and vinous beverages and to sell malt and vinous beverages to the public from such premises for consumption off the premises..."

I'm not sure why anybody would want to disrupt free trade. Supply and demand -- the need to turn profit and grow sales are some of the basic tennents of our capitalist economy. If a bottle shop can legally ship beer to some vs selling to locals - power to 'em I say.

People complain about the secondary market for beer all the time, how is a store selling super limited beer at a high markup any different?
Cali stores can ship too, but you don't see Pliny on the webstores...

I'm not sure as to what store this thread is in reference to, however I know that Manchester Discount Beverages, in Manchester, Vermont is a store in Southern Vermont that not only holds beer for its customers, but also offers the shipping of beer in the United States. They do not charge an extra cost when the item is purchased and all customers are treated equally. They use an off premise local shipping company that assumes all liabilities and also charges its customers applicable shipping costs. Shipping laws had changed almost 2 years ago in the state of Vermont, which now allows people to ship beer, as well as wine out of state. Liquor is excluded from shipping by the VtDLC.

Sure sounds an awful lot like my hometown of Manchester, VT! (Which is why I moved north to beer mecca for college and never left.)

It's not illegal (according to beermanVT's post) but it's certainly not commonplace. I argue that it's a gray area because I don't think it's fair to ship out beer that is only available in limited quantities in that region because it robs local customers of a chance to acquire that beer.

I have talked to one of the beer guys at this store. I am not sure if they ship they the real limited vermont beer. But they seem like a very fair place that takes care of their local regular customers. When i was there they were holding some mastermind for one of their regulars. I was a little bummed i couldn't buy any, but i lucked out and said customer walked in, bought his mastermind and traded me some. I wonder if their email is blowing up right now haha.

Wouldn't it make more sense for these folks to come here to buy the beer and spend money locally, as opposed to shipping it hundreds, possibly thousands of miles away?
