When I get Maximus really fresh, it's just like if you grilled pineapple to get it all mellow and caramelized, and then made juice out of it with fresh oranges. I bet you just had an old bottle.

I agree that all Lagunitas IPA's have a common thread. I also believe it is yeast related. I'm willing to bet this beer in question is old based on the vinegar tasted. I obviously like some Lagunitas brews more than others, but have never had any major complaints.

@TongoRad I was just going to post pineapple. I was drinking a Maximus with a friend and he was searching to describe the flavor. As soon as said pineapple, he went "bingo"! That's it.

Hell yeah- I find that in a lot of their beers (well...the ones I like, anyway ).

I love Lagunitas but Hop Stoopid and Maximus don't do it for me. I get a rubber or oniony flavor from Hop Stoopid. Haven't had Maximus in awhile so I might have to give that one another shot.

Vinegar? Doesn't sound like anything I've ever picked up on from Lagunitas.

While they do use pellets, Hop Stoopid does have some hop extract, it's on the label.

First its vinegar now its menthol? both vastly different descriptors.
If it is indeed vinegary then you probably have a bad batch (infected/imporper storage) and should let them know..try to find a bottle with the same date on it and see if you get the same taste/aroma.
The menthol could be hop produced or could be just the alcohol giving you the "cooling" sensation along with a sweetness.

I agree . maximus has a tiny taste of hemp seed in it though. Perhaps it's that .
