Cool. That's exactly what I took away from your review.

Jeez I looked on the bay to see if anyone put up a battle priest, sure enough, one is at $102 with about 6 and half days remaining. :grimacing: That shit cray!

But is there anything that says an AWA has to be a sour?

According to BA's definition of the style:
If this beer were fermented with Brett, it would appear to meet BA's definition of an AWA. Whether it is sour or not doesn't matter.

I don't think you guys understand what what "wild" in AWA stands for. The wild stands for wild yeast, which is for the most part Brettanomyces. So I would say AWA is a very good style for this beer. Brett does not produce sour characteristics. I fell this misunderstanding is common because almost all commercial beers that contain Brett are soured with bacteria as well, so people associate brett with sour beers.

Thanks for the explanation, but I do understand how sours are made. I was raising the question (perhaps not clearly) if categorizing Batttle Priest as an AWA was most appropriate since it's a Belgian Strong Pale Ale w/Brett. Two relevant examples are Boulevard's Saison-Brett that is categorized as a Saison even though it has Brett and Green Flash's Rayon Vert is a Belgian Pale Ale w/Brett and it's categorized as a Belgian Pale Ale. For consistency I'd say Battle Priest probably should be categorized as a Belgian Strong Pale Ale. For the most part, despite the definition, it seems that in practice American-brewed sours are categorized as AWA's on BA. My second statement was exactly what you were stating just because a brew has Brett added doesn't necessarily make it a sour. I'm fully aware that Brett only adds funk.

I'm the one who picked AWA, and I picked that style because it's consistent with Russian River Sanctification. AFAIK Saison-Brett and Rayon Vert have brett added AT BOTTLING, whereas Battle Priest is 100% Brett fermentation.

This was fermented with only brett yeast, those other had brett added after the primary was completed by a non-brett yeast. If this beer isn't considered a American Wild Ale, I think that the category is completely worthless as a description of the beers with in it. For that matter almost all commercial sours included in the AWA category had bacteria for souring added after the main fermentation was completed with a non-brett yeast, similar to the beers w/brett you mentioned. Should those not be included in the category?

It's probably a bad idea to post the same picture in BA that you used in your Ebay post.

Couldn't just drink it? Or trade it for other tasty beers you may want?

Then I just got hosed. That's what I get for peace-ing out at work midday on a weekday showing up in business casual. Ya know, the non-hipster, non-tatted up crowd likes good beer too.

Yeah, didn't get that either. Either way, I'm not going to dwell on that fact too much as I kind of want to hit him in the face with a shovel.

Yet another 5 year "vet" gone down the eBay path. I could almost swear that half of the "vet" accounts that recently became active are these types.
