Hello again NBS. getting here later than I like but made it nonetheless. Another BBA stout for me. Have a good evening all.

Pours dark brown with creamy off-white head. Looks milky.
Nose is prominent vanilla and bourbon background. Not much else here.
Taste follow the nose. A lot of vanilla and a little bit of the bourbon barrel. Some bitterness helps balance with sweetness.
Feel is very creamy, medium body and lower side carbonation. Feel hits pretty good for this style, especially with the vanilla being front stage. Doesn't linger very long and not especially "mouth coating".

Getting to like BBA stouts and this one didn't dissappoint. The vanilla in this stout really shines and the bourbon is positioned well within the profile without becoming overbearing. If this had a little bit more charred smokey wood flavor, this would really hit the spot for me. Even with out it, it's a very good, bordering on sweet stout, with a splash of booze/bourbon.

    New American Spiced Stout Sunday!

Work day was boring yet I made it through. Now it's time for a new Brew!

Working my way through this one right now. I've never had this before and it was released last year but I never seen it. Well, that Changed last Friday. I seen this little guy chilling so I picked it up. I'm usually not a fan of Sierra Nevada's Hoppy offerings except Celebration and Big Foot. I am thoug a complete fan of their Porter, buts for another discussion. Enough jibber jabber time for my thoughts on this new brew. First you can see how this brew pours, very nice! The aroma has a nice bouquet of rich burnt sugar and roasted malts with a chocolate vibe. Just intense for a Sierra Nevada brew. Taste test time Mofos! Hits the palate with residual sugars and with a ginger vibe going on. Second wave of rich chocolate that is so mellow yet delicious. This finishes semi dry with some slight bitterness. The aftertaste is banging! It's rich and sweet with chocolate and burnt marshmellows. Almost like a s'mores without that graham cracker texture. The feel is medium-light on the palate with tight almost aggressive carbonation.

Overall: As you guys know I'm not a Sierra Nevada fan boy. Most of their offerings are a bit "tame" and not adventurous. This is a hit for me! The richness of this brew is spectacular and how it's balanced and not a sugar bomb of a brew. The flavors are not muddled and make sense on the palate. Very enjoyable in my opinion. Since there isn't a huge dose of bitterness makes this monster a constant gulper, not sipper. This brew is Recommended!

    Grade: A

I hope this stays in rotation, delicious!

    Musical Selection:

This whole album is a piece of audio art.

Cheers my fellow New Beer Sunday Crew!

I love Old Ales and Lovecraft, so thanks for the review. Wish we got Naragansett in our market.

Picked up that very album by The Ocean on a whim a few weeks ago. A great band in the vein of Isis and early Mastodon.

Back from our trip to NC where we got to visit Asheville and Charlotte to check out some breweries (as well as a couple along the way). Quite a few good brews were tried, but we didn't really put a dent in the offerings of the area. Rain kept us from enjoying the lovely mountain outdoors as much as we'd like. Back home to relax after driving the last leg, got to watch the Caps be outplayed for the bulk of the game, but almost pull it out.

Decided a lighter beer would be best for today, so went with a Saison from Burial Beer Company. The Garden of Earthly Delights is a 5% beer brewed with various added ingredients: golden beets, hibiscus, cherry and ginseng. Maybe it's the power of suggestion, but I thought I got a little of each ingredient (funny how the light makes the two glasses appear different shades).

Saisons are not my forté, and this one didn't work for me as much as I'd hoped, though my girlfriend enjoyed it. Others might enjoy it, as it has a dry sawdust feel and a sandpaper carbonation & pepperiness combination, some qualities that reminded me of Saison DuPont (which I do not really like that well). The hibiscus comes through in the smell, cherries make an appearance in the taste (greater as it warms), but the anticipated funkiness is missing or masked.

Awesome review and great patches! I used to write letters to NASA as a kid all the time and was delighted to receive SST ones from time to time. But your Skylab one beats all. We should be getting Saturn this week, and I can't wait. Any clue if Third Coast Old Ale is the base beer?

    Good afternoon, NBS-ers...

I just pulled a couple of steaks from the fridge - while they're resting I'm trying a new beer:

Pisgah Brewing's Cosmos - a Belgian strong ale that pours a deep amber with a nice mocha cap. The sweetness is a bit overpowering, loads of brown sugar and bubblegum; beneath that lies some dark fruit and a hint of smoke. The nose smacks of cola and - guess what? - more sugar. Crazy sweet brew that's a bit over the top - but it's a pleasant sipper nonetheless, on this rain soaked Sunday in North Carolina. http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/10153/36183/

    Here's a shot of this morning's breakfast:

Hey NBS what's up! Hope you all are enjoying your weekend. In the 70s here in the Northeast yesterday and my whole attitude got a positive boost with daffodils popping up and lots of sun. I my continued efforts to thouroghly confuse you all I have a story to tell: Every year I have a little family of rabbits that takes refuge under my deck and then springs a family out right about now. So I see a little tiny one this morning and think that will play into my NBS posting for the day.
I'm thinking rabbit, soft, cuddly ......Lennie one of the main characters from Steinbecks "Of Mice and Men" great book with many underlying social ethical analogies. (Remember High School? I barely do). So I did me a little research and want to share this quote from JS with you all. [IMG] "In every bit of writing in this world there is a base theme. Try to understand men, if you understand each other you will be kind to each other. Knowing a man well never leads to hate and almost always leads to love. There are shorter means, many of them. There is writing promoting social change, writing punishing injustice, writing in celebration of heroism, but always that base theme. Try to understand each other. JS 1938 Journal.
    This is what WE do.
    OK BEER TIME!
Buddhas Juice, IPA brewed with Buddhas Hand and Grapefruit Peel. Wormtown Brewery, Worcester, Ma.
A- beautiful bronze color with a tan head that sticks around for a bit. Wonderful lacing that almost looks like hieroglyphics on the side of the glass.
S- grapefruit of course, piney, candied lemon peel and orange. Has interesting twist.
T- tasty brew! Grapefruit and pine follow aroma with a nice little bitterness, not overpowering. Touch of sweet malts in the middle. Orange/tangerine. There's a unique citrusy sweetness in the taste which I'm assuming is the Buddha's Hand. A well balanced brew with a ton of flavor happening.
M- sweet and bitter up front that fades to a pleasant bitter on the back end as the sweetnes slowly deteriorates . Medium carb. Dry finish.
Alcohol well hidden, very easy to drink. Sneaks up on you.
O- another great brew from Wormtown. If you can possibly get a hold of this try it. I will be looking to get this one again.
You could drink this a few times and stay interested.
Digging into vinyl old vinyl to find my favorite unnremebered or unrecognized artists:
Sonny Boy Williamson. Harp player, songwriter and singer extrodinaire. He's written hundreds of songs. Many covered by artists such as Led Zeppelin , the Stones and Allman Brothers among many more. This man must have been born with 2 sets of lungs because the way he plays harp and bends reeds plus sing is almost impossible to believe.
Thanks my friends. Enjoyed hanging. And as always Thanks for listening.[IMG] [IMG]

Happy afternoon to all NBS BAs! Almost had it last night, but decided to save it for NBS. I been looking for my old camera so I can get better pics but found what I think is a 1966 polaroid camera instead.

    New English Style Barleywine Sunday
Mikkeller ForĂŞt Limousine (Light Toasted) 19.30% ABV

A very copper colored beer with a thin crisp snow white top. Some motion as there is puny bubbles rising to the top.
The scent is very piny, fruity and caramel sweet. The first sip: Honey and oak, I let sit for a bit and started getting that caramel sweetness and very enticing spice at the same time. It's pretty incredible. It's 19.30% ABV, so it's a heavyweight, it's masked pretty well, but you will feel that brandy/cognac style burn at the end, but the burn blends beautifully with the complex fruit, oak flavors and I simply can't put it down. I am having a bit of brie cheese to go with it and it's heaven. Lucky for me my chores are done because not much will get done after one of these!

Overall, this is a wonderful Barleywine offering from the great experiment that is Mikkeller. I don't smoke, but I wish I had a great cigar to go with this blissful beer. Determined to try the medium roasted.

A toast to @Rouger for the great job at the helm and to the NBS community.

    Cheers!

    New Trillium Sunday

Got this big ass box of beer from my first trade buddy @paresis this week. I believe it contained 21 new to me beers, which was good because like @TongoRad, I tend to drink all of mine throughout the week. In fact, I had picked up about 6 to pick from this week and only 1 survived.
Went with this one for today due to a lot of praise for this brewery from several of you east coasters, including @twizzard

A 3/30/15 dated bottle poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass.

Pours a very, very milky/cloudy pale orange to yellow. Looks like a glass of pale orange juice. Taking that whole east coast thing to a new level. Big white, fluffy head leaves a decent amount of lacing and a thin ring and film on top.

Smells very good, but nothing overwhelming. Very citrusy with a bit of a champagne or white wine like sourness. Slightly pungeunt hop oil. Light malts.

When it comes to the drinking of it part, things get more interesting. It is a blast of zesty orange, grapefruit, and some lemongrass in that order. Then some green grape sweet and sour, and closes with a piney/herbal bite, but not real bitter. Alcohol is a non-factor.

The body is pretty solid, but easy drinking. Definitely a crisp, almost champagne like carbonation middle to end.

I am kind of all over the place with this one. I always try to rate as close to style as possible to be fair, but this one screams Double/ Imperial IPA to me. It is like a Dirt Wolf on steroids. The flavors are crazy good, but I am not a big fan of the carbonation/sparkly feel. I guess in the end, it is all about what it tastes like. To me, it is a World Class beer. No White Rajah though:grinning:

    Time to dig in again...

Seems these single hop series are really popular with the brewery, but this ones angle has me a bit unexpected..

Single Hop Imperial IPA (Warrior) - Flying Dog Brewery

Flying Dog Brewery - Single Hop Warrior Imperial IPA
    by imbibehour, on Flickr

    ---------------------------

Poured from the bottle into a Spiegelau IPA glass.

Classic crystal clear, and amber red bronzed bodied color, with lots of nice rising pinhead carbonation, not too much and not too little. The head builds large and frothy, with a big thick cap and minor to small swiss cheese like retention. The head color is a bit odd, it appears tan at first but gets into a very yellow banana cream like appearance which is kind of wild sitting on a red bronze body. Shimmering and glowing and unique, very impressive looking brew.

Aroma is fairly basic as to some degree anticipated. Very mellow sense of perhaps some leafy pine, and mild bitterness. Some small sensing caramel and nice soft biscuit like quality but very subtle. Honestly a simple sweetness of malt is dominate but not much else really going on.

Palate flavors simply and nicely though. Mellow hop forward hints of pine and leafy bitter match with some simple malt sugars. A bit of treacle like quality comes forward with a classic melting and very aromatic hop bitter aftertaste. Slightly juiced classic dipa notes hit the palate well, giving just a hint of possible fruit like sweetness.

Overall it's what I expect, just a solid backboned IPA with a touch of malty controlled sweetness that doesn't go overboard, even at 10% ABV.

    look: 4.5 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4 | BA Score: 3.91

    -----------------------------------------------------

So a bittering hop for a semi SMASH beer (actually I don't know if these in the series are SMASH brews but they are of course single hopped). Kind of unexpected but hits at the classic East coast perhaps IPA style stripped down...

Hey NBS! I hope everyone is enjoying their Sunday as much as we are! It started off sunny and beautiful but recently turned cloudy and cooler. We spent the morning working in the yard as a family. The little guy was "helping" us weed which basically meant we were desperately trying to save the sugar pea sprouts from an untimely death by composting. We were largely successful I think.

I had a small glass from the big bottle while he slept off his hard work. The rest is for after his bed time.
