No common water source as far as I know...

One theory I have (but is more applicable to me than to you) is just that I'm basically never having a hoppy beer that is more than a week old. Even when I get bottles of Trillium, it's often the same day that they bottled. Whereas when I traded for some PtE, even though it was "fresh" it was still 3-4 weeks old.

I'm sure @LehighAce06 has something to add about freshness.

Cousin identification must be difficult down there -- "oh, yeah -- Jethro-Bob is my first, second, and third cousin-in-law; 2, 3, and 5 times removed"

fresh, lack of caramel malts, great hops = good ipas

The NE style is a bit more full bodied and balanced, probably some lactose

"lack of caramel malts" - one of my factors for sure

:astonished: I'm pretty sure most places use their own municipality's water, and don't ship it in; it's also not that hard to build your own water profile if you want to use something different than what comes in off the tap, so I highly doubt any brewery, especially a small one, is spending money shipping in water, from another country no less. I could also be 100% wrong, but this just seems illogical.

Freshness surely helps and, at first, I thought it was a Trillium thing. However, I recently tried some Night Shift, Tree House and Trillium on consecutive days and they all had the same "something" that made me say "This is a NE IPA/PA." The doughy factor @xICooRsYIx helps but there I think there is something else.

Getting a bottle of Trillium the day of the bottling must be quite the spiritual experience.

This doesn't hurt one tiny bit, but I've had PtE at the source. While it's an excellent beer, it doesn't hold a candle to Trillium or Tired Hands.

I think in both of those cases, the difference is twofold. Both of those use newer varieties of hops (NZ hops, Citra, Amarillo, Lemon Drop, etc) which have much jucier, fruitier flavor profiles, whereas Pliny uses Columbus, Centennial, and Simcoe (all good hops, but more along the piney end of the spectrum than fruity).

Secondly, they also tend to incorporate malts with higher Lovibond; PtE is a very crisp, clean IPA, whereas Trillium and Tired Hands tend to have a heavy haze and smoother, creamier mouthfeel, which comes from frequent use of wheat or Crystal malt. PtE does use some Crystal 40L, but not a ton, so I'm inclined to think the malt bill of Trillium and Tired Hands IPAs goes for it a little more; and this is probably what people are describing as "doughy".

Not directly from Canada, but the watershed. Is the source of water in the NE from Lakes? If so, from where are the lakes filled?

For example, a good portion of the water where I live actually comes from Lake Texoma, on the border of Oklahoma. Houston uses Dallas' toilet water (http://www.khou.com/story/local/2015/04/28/11671664/) :stuck_out_tongue:. And who can forget about the clean, fresh Rocky Mountain water used for Coors.

I know most brewers treat their water in some way, but all start off with a different base.

Oh that makes much more sense, thank you for clarifying. Though if the brewer strips the water all the way down, then it doesn't matter from what watershed it comes; I doubt breweries like TH and Trillium do this though, so your point definitely holds up.

I hope your wife didn't give you a curfew since you have the new born. If she did, then you might as well break the news to her now. YOU AIN'T GONNA MAKE IT!

I mean, if I go at all (I'm stuck around 95% approval) I'll be staying over.... with how much is being brought, and the threats of incoming porch bombs to deal with, we're going to need to make this a 3-day bender just to drink it all!

After dark lord day last weekend and this weekend of debauchery upcoming, it's safe to say you guys won't be seeing me much here. Once I check myself into rehab I can't imagine beer advocate is on the allowed sites list....
