So I'm going to be in the Austin area for a couple of days in May and I was planning on checking out Jester King and Austin Beerworks. Any recommendations for bottle shops or bars in town? Also, anyone interested in trading for any beers I can get in Virginia?

Skip Whichcraft and head south of town to Southwestern Parkway Market. It's very unsuspecting, but the quality is more than comparable to Whichcraft, and the prices are a little more realistic. In addition, I can recommend the Central Market on Broadie Lane. Go to the Draughthouse for beer (great selection, fair prices) or Wright Bros Brew & Brew (sometimes they have rarities on; this past week they had KBS,CBS, and other Founders goodies). Bangers is okay, but you're paying an extra $1-2 per beer for the atmosphere.

.. and then there's Whip In. Some people love it (myself included) and some people can't get past the purported 'urinal cake smell' that I've never come across personally. However, their beer selection is on point (though some can be a little high) and their house brews are surprisingly tasty.

To each their own on WhichCraft I guess. They use the same markup as East 1st or Sunrise. No idea about the prices of Southwestern as I do not shop there often.

But, when you are coming in from out of town and you really do not know the local scene, walking into a store with people who do not know the beer and standing behind the counter does not do you much good. Personally, I think being able to ask questions and have someone walk around with you helping you in that area could be useful for an out of town person.

But, I will not disagree on the Southwestern selection. Most of the Austin stores will have similar selections...I am just not as big of a convenience store place versus a actual bottle shop.

And Central Market/Whole Foods/Specs will have cheaper prices than the smaller stores, but that is to be expected.

And, I am friends with the owner of WhichCraft, so I am biased. Obviously.

Pinthouse Pizza for breweries. Great beer, great guest taps, and great pizza.
