Someone once told me that they had ordered mail-order beer that came in a styro shipper some 50-100 times, and never once had a broken bottle, and the shipper never used anything at all on top of the styro itself, "good enough for them, good enough for me." With that said I still do more to keep the bottles from bouncing around so much for sound if nothing else.

I agree on the sturdiness and reliability of styro shippers... however, i hate the magnified sloshing noises they typically make. Ever since i had a near "gotcha" experience not so long ago ive decided to never use em again...

As others have said, keeping the bottles from bouncing around is the main thing. If I'm using a styro I don't put any additional bubble wrap around the bottles at all. If its a 22oz I - might- put a small piece of bubble wrap or paper at the bottom so it doesn't move around at all (but probably not). 12 oz, or 330/375/500 mL bottles I'll put some bubble wrap around and put some paper or something under them so they don't move around so much, but that's it.

What kind of 'gotcha' experience? I use them extensively for shipping as luggage (though in those cases I'm upfront about the fact that I have beer/wine in them). One of my shippers has probably made 8-10 trips with me now (out of probably 4-5 shippers that I keep around to use for that purpose). Was this a case of the sound being loud and causing a shipper to question you about it?

Yes, exactly. I dropped a few boxes - all beer but only one a shipper (12). As they were taking the packages back and i was leaving they called me back in and asked "any chance theres alcohol in here - i hear a lot of sloshing". I simply said "no, no way" and left. I thought they'd inspect it for sure but thankfully they didnt and it made it to its destination (it was actually @rspauldi 's box).

On a related note. I've always tried to ship beers vertically positioned in the box, which may minimize sloshing and maximize space. Ive noticed that square boxes are rarely flipped on their sides at the store. Rectangular boxes (which shipper usually are) are more commonly flipped to make them fit or stack up better with other packages...

Again, if your info is up to date in the directory, just let me know, otherwise make sure your shipping info is included, as well as any style likes/dislikes so that I can forward that on to whoever your sender may end up being.

Yeah I've had all their one offs I believe. Save for the cognac barely wine I think.

I have some of their bottles of trail magic stout back before 22 oz bottles too.

I'll be in Asheville Saturday late morning or afternoon to pick up my golden angel allocation. Sample some beers and putz around town. Might see if I can get some maceo from greenman but will probably strike out.

Nantahala released a new barrel aged stout for their anniversary, want any? I'll be playing golf Friday in Cherokee and then do my usual stop in Bryson on the way to the house and sit around for a few beers there

You're going to have a tough time finding Maceo on Saturday since the release is on Sunday  I'm going to a wedding on Saturday in Black Mountain and then potentially sticking around and going to the Green Man and Wicked Weed releases on Sunday (since I didn't preorder bottles... damn European vacation getting in the way). Will be interesting if I can pull off both Maceo and Golden Angel.

I'd add, put the whole thing inside a big plastic bag, just in case... No need to over pack.
