Can someone give me an idea of Hen prices? Like, what if "no budget" is actually a "relaxed budget"?

I've only been once but, also being from the Boston area, I didn't get sticker shock from Hen of the Woods as it was pretty much in line with most upscale/trendy places here. I want to say we spent about $150 for a typical app/entree/2 drinks each couple's experience. Would be more if you tend towards pricier wine or cocktails rather than beer.

And unlike a lot of restaurants that cost that much, I *really* felt like it was money well spent there. Amazing service and ambience with excellent and imaginative food.

ETA: I thought Pro Pig was perfectly fine as far as food goes but I myself didn't think it was a place I would go very often if it wasn't for the beer list. Service was somewhat cranky both times I've been too.

There's a reason my avatar is a Pro Pig glass filled with HF Double Citra. Go there for dinner. Please hit Lost Nation for lunch, they don't get enough credit for what they do with their food and beer. Amazing Gose!

We had another very good meal at Blue Stone this week and would say that in terms of Price-Quality-Service, it was better than the meals that we had at both Pro Pig and HOTW. The tap list was stellar ($8 boss pours of KBS or $7.50 cans of SOS,Heady or Focal), the food was very good, portioned and timed to our table well and the restaurant itself was spacious and roomy unlike both Pro Pig and HOTW. I feel like Blue Stone gets a bad wrap here sometimes and haven't ever seen evidence to support it in the 3 or 4 times that we've been there.

OP- Pro Pig is a must, their BBQ, sauces and of course beer is exceptional.

I really wouldn't fuss over HOTW if you don't have to. The service, quality of food and ambiance are very nice but not enough to have to worry about getting a reservation on a Friday or Saturday Night and of course the prices are on par with what you would find in NYC or Boston.

Check out the menu (http://henofthewood.com/menu) and then add another ~$50 for drinks

Thanks for all the great suggestions guys. I wish I had time to stop at all of these places, I think I will have to find a way to add another day onto this trip. I will be taking this trip by motorcycle, which means I can only bring a limited amount back, so I am trying to make the most of my experience while I am there. Here is my tentative itinerary:

    Day One:
Leave house by 9 to make it to Worthy Burger for lunch and a beer or two around noon
Head over to Rt 100 via Camp Brook Rd and stop at the mad taco for a pork belly taco snack around 2ish
Make my way to Ben & Jerry's Factory for a tour and ice cream of course around 3
Head to Little River State Park to set up camp (close as possible to road to waterbury)
Walk to Prohibition Pig for dinner and lots of beer
Find my way back to camp and turn in for the night

    Day Two:
Light breakfast at camp and perhaps a hike in the park if I'm feeling up for it
Take the long way through smuggler's notch to Lost Nation for lunch and a beer or two
Head to Hill Farmstead, this will likely be the only beer I bring back, still figuring out the logistics of that haha
    Parker Pie for dinner
Still undecided as for what to do for lodging/camping for night two

    Day Three:
Head back in time for work

Please feel free to offer any advice, suggestions, or modifications to my itinerary. How does the timing look for the first day? Where should I stay for night two? (cheaper is better) I appreciate all your help so far.

Sounds great. I'd be interested to hear how the Little River <-> Downtown Waterbury trek works out. I don't mind a long walk, and that might be a nice alternative when Waterbury's extensive lodging options fill up.

It's not really walkable from Little River to downtown Waterbury, barely bikeable. You can't pick your own campsite at Little River unless you do so in advance of course. I would skip Ben and Jerries and see some more bars. When will someone start a beer taxi/ guide service in Waterbury??

A trusted source says Worthy Burger was a massive let down, but Pro Pig is god like, Mad Taco is JUST behind it

Pro Pig's brisket and coleslaw were both awful when I was there in February, but I enjoyed everything else.

I had a bad time with the brisket as well. (also in Feb)
Three Penny Taproom is my favorite. The burgers are great!

Me three on unappetizing brisket at Pro Pig. That was back in October. I'm glad it didn't dissuade me from trying their BBQ again; I loved the chopped pork plate a couple of weeks ago.

I've always had a great experience at WB, any details? I am sure ownership would address any concerns.

Honestly, I'm not sure exactly what he didn't like about it. I guess he thinks they didn't live up to they hype. I still have them at the top of my list of places to try next time I'm up in VT. I'll leave my personal feedback on the restaurant when I've actually tried them and it isn't just hearsay.

I've always had a great time with food, drink and service at Worthy Burger. Probably my favorite place to have a sandwich and a drink in VT.

Doesn't that really just come down to how far you are willing to walk?

Yeah - I've got to agree that Pro Pig was a big letdown for me when I visited. Tap list was amazing though.

I suspect peoples opinion of Pro Pig may have a lot to due with what they're used to. If you're coming from NYC and used to finding great food at a bar, it's very "meh". If on the other hand, your local bar grub is Applebee's, yeah, it's probably pretty damn good.
